Thailand's Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, refuted allegations that recent changes to prison regulations were designed to favor former leader Thaksin Shinawatra, or to support political allies. The amendments, which address inmate medical transfers and sentence suspensions, raised concerns they might expedite Thaksin’s prison exit to assist the Pheu Thai Party. Anutin dismissed these claims, asserting that his government was not formed to target political rivals.

Anutin emphasized the independence of the legal system and denied any political intervention. He explained that the royal pardon request for Thaksin was an existing issue from former Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong’s time. Anutin merely forwarded the request, which has since been lifted. He clarified that any follow-up was beyond his control once the request was submitted to the palace.

Critics accuse the government of using its power politically, but Anutin rejected these allegations. He stressed that accusations reflect the critics' own intentions, and not the government’s. During the discussion, Anutin humorously suggested Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas as a potential future prime ministerial candidate, though Ekniti made no comment on the matter.

Anutin stressed the importance of his party's growth beyond reliance on a single leader. He playfully mentioned ongoing discussions with Ekniti about joining the Bhumjaithai Party, indicating no formal commitment yet. This dialogue reflects strategic planning within the party as it looks to expand and strengthen its political influence, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • Anutin denies claims of politically motivated amendments benefiting Thaksin.
  • Legal independence is highlighted, with royal pardon matters beyond government control.
  • Bhumjaithai Party hints at plans for leadership diversification and growth.

It's good to have a PM with a sense of humour.

I think all politicians have no credibility whatever country they come from.🤣. I would trust a used car salesman more than a politician and that's not good!

No, your wrong. That was Thamanat Prompow  in 1994, who was convicted and served 4 years in Australia. He became Deputy Agriculture Minister, seems he had experience.
