Political elites gathered in Washington, D.C., on Thursday to pay their respects at Dick Cheney’s funeral, marking the end of an era for pre-MAGA Republican politics. Former Presidents Joe Biden and George W. Bush, along with living ex-vice presidents, attended the service at the National Cathedral. Notably absent were US President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, who did not receive an invitation.

Cheney, who served as Bush’s vice president from 2001 to 2009, died on 3 November at age 84. Bush praised Cheney’s public service, recalling him as a decisive figure who influenced his presidential journey, despite Cheney’s own initial reluctance to run as vice president. Alongside Bush, his eulogy highlighted Cheney’s enduring reputation for reliability and leadership.

While President Trump refrained from commenting publicly, JD Vance extended his condolences, recognising Cheney's service to America. Cheney’s daughter, Liz Cheney, remembered her father’s principles, reflecting on his shift from supporting Trump to opposing him, especially following the Capitol insurrection investigation.

Prominent figures such as Nancy Pelosi, John Thune, and Mitch McConnell attended the memorial. There were also Supreme Court justices, past and present Cabinet members, and congressional leaders from both parties in attendance. Despite the historic gathering, the exclusion of Trump wasn't unexpected, given Cheney's criticisms of him and support for figures like Kamala Harris, reported CNN.

Pete Williams shared memories of Cheney's supportive nature, recounting personal experiences working under him. People fondly recalled Cheney's significant military and political contributions, but his controversial legacy as the architect of the Iraq War remained significant.

Key Takeaways:

  • Dick Cheney’s funeral was a bipartisan event attended by former presidents and vice-presidents.
  • US President Trump and VP JD Vance were excluded from the guest list.
  • Cheney’s legacy was honoured despite past controversies.

Did they change their mind about the war in Iraq?

The handwriting is on the wall - the rule of the red hat regime is coming to an end. Republican politicians are starting to revolt as they realize this lame duck will be gone long before the end of THEIR political ambitions end, and tethering themselves to a loser is having obvious consequences. The damage done will take a while to be repaired, much like Germany having to clean house after WW II. History will not be kind to those who supported their atrocious behavior.

Be that as it may, the left despised Cheney, right up until until the moment he came out against Trump, then he became a hero to the left.

“Look, Dick Cheney and I disagreed on just about everything,” said Tom Daschle, a liberal South Dakota Democrat who served as the Senate majority leader during the first term of the Bush administration.

“But he had character and honest convictions. He was a traditional conservative. I’m amazed at the number of Democrats who tell me they’d give anything to see Cheney and Bush back in office.”

Yeah, Reagan was Hitler until Bush one, then Bush one was Hitler until Bush two, them Bush two was Hitler until Trump, now Trump is Hitler until Vance runs,

Didn't Tom Daschle use to call Cheney Darth Vader?

You gotta problem with what Mr. Daschle said you can con tact him here:

I give less than a sh*t what that old POC says.

The question is more like : why would Trump and Vance want to "honour" that AH ?

No wonder Biden would like a fellow warmonger like Cheney.

No. Wars are never moral. They are  unfortunately, often the result of a necessity.

I was not a fan of Mr. Cheney, however, I recognize that he stuck to his principles, even those I disliked and disagreed with. I did not like many of his political views, but he was not one to violate the US Constitution.

Biden knew him from his time as a Senator from Delaware, when Cheney was  VP. Cheney was respectful of the transition process from the Bush administration to the Obama administration.  I see Biden's presence at the funeral as a gesture of respect for a former VP and a man who gave so much of his time in public office. Do you really have to make this a trip to the  garbage can of  insults?

Actually, my comments were very mild in the circumstances.

Quite respectful in fact, when you consider the number of deaths and the long term fallout from the war in Iraq.

If you wish to brush that brutal war under the carpet and instead focus on the fact he eased Obama into office, you go ahead. Just don't expect me to stoop with you.
