Industry leaders, however, call for regulatory reforms to enhance well-being services. Bhummikitti Ruktaengam, vice-president of the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT), aligns this initiative with government goals to boost tourism spending and encourage longer stays. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched a theme, "Healing is the New Luxury", emphasizing mental well-being, healthy eating, and relaxation. In Phuket, foreign tourists frequently participate in wellness activities such as Muay Thai for weight loss and personalized medical treatments. Artirat Charukitpipat of Bumrungrad International Hospital highlighted Thailand's long-standing reputation for medical tourism, emphasizing high healthcare standards, specialized doctors, and exceptional hospitality. Despite competition from Middle Eastern countries, Thai hospitality and tourism remain attractive. Middle Eastern operators are showing interest in Thai wellness clinics for their own regions. The Global Wellness Institute valued the industry's worth at $6.3 trillion in 2023, with wellness tourism accounting for $830 billion. High-growth areas include wellness real estate, preventive and personalized medicine, and mental wellness. With emerging technologies like hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wearable health devices, there's potential for further growth. Artirat noted Thailand's small share of the global wellness market as an opportunity for expansion. Looking forward, she expects a shift towards preventive care, reducing hospital workloads as consumer awareness of personal health increases. Bhummikitti stresses the need for a robust ecosystem to maintain leadership in the wellness sector. Current challenges include high rates of non-communicable diseases, regulatory obstacles, and the need for healthcare personnel. Proposed solutions involve streamlining registrations, promoting balanced diets, and enhancing healthcare education. Without swift regulatory evolution, Thailand risks falling behind regional competitors like Singapore, reported Bangkok Post. Key Takeaways Thailand seeks to enhance its wellness and medical tourism sectors. Experts call for streamlined regulations and focus on preventive care. Emerging technologies could significantly boost industry growth. November 25, 2025Nov 25 "Healing is the new luxury"??? seems a bit odd.... here is Oxford definition: " It is also defined as something expensive that is enjoyable but not necessary (e.g., champagne) and a pleasure or advantage that is not often had (e.g., a day off work." Many think health and healing is a basic need and necessary. "Well, I could have some cancer care, but I'd rather spend my cash on a new Audi...."
