King Norodom Sihamoni has left Phnom Penh for Paris to attend an official event hosted by the French Academy of Sciences, marking a visit that blends diplomacy, science, and cultural engagement.

The monarch was seen off at Techo International Airport by senior figures including Senate President Hun Sen, National Assembly President Khuon Sudary, Prime Minister Hun Manet, ministers, and members of the royal family. In his absence, Mr Hun Sen will serve as Acting Head of State until the King’s return later this week.

During his stay in Paris, King Sihamoni will not only attend the Academy’s programme but also visit several cultural and academic institutions. These include Wat Khemararam, the University Library of Languages and Civilisations, and the newly established Royal Residence of Cambodia. His itinerary reflects a dual commitment to promoting Cambodian heritage abroad and strengthening ties with French institutions.

The French Academy of Sciences, founded in the 17th century, remains a cornerstone of European scientific life. On 9 December it will host a public lecture on genetics and neurodegenerative diseases, underscoring its role in advancing research and addressing pressing global health challenges. The Academy is known for encouraging scientific inquiry across disciplines, from mathematics to molecular biology, and for shaping public debate on issues such as climate, ethics, and health policy.

Beyond its research mission, the Academy fosters scientific culture through education, guided tours, and publications accessible to both French and international audiences. It also supports equal opportunities with scholarships and disseminates knowledge widely through digital platforms. Each year, it awards nearly 80 prizes recognising excellence across fundamental and applied sciences.

King Sihamoni’s presence at the Academy highlights Cambodia’s engagement with global scientific discourse while reinforcing cultural diplomacy. His visits to Khmer institutions in Paris serve as a reminder of the country’s enduring heritage and its place within the international community.

The trip, though brief, symbolises a bridge between tradition and modernity: a monarch rooted in cultural identity, participating in debates that shape the future of science and society.
