Is Pad Thai the perfect storm of allergies?

Featured Replies

I'm not the biggest fan of Pad Thai in the first place (considering it's origin story as well) but now this!

Ironic but the best pad thai I had was not in Thailand....just as often some of the best european food I have eaten was in a sleazy looking restaurant in Thailand.

Pad Thai is probably the most overrated of Thai foods.

I have yet to see a Thai eat one.

Agree, it's definitely a last choice with the wife and myself.  Means nothing else is immediately available, and that's rare.

I have but I get your point.

(so have I to be honest  -  but it would have been a weaker statement if I had said "...I have only seen a few Thais eat Pad Thai)

Yeah I get you but I'm reminded of a street food joint in South Pattaya that specializes in a weird kind of pork pad Thai that's always packed and almost all Thais.

I usually only pass through South Pattaya and, from my experience in Isaan, the locals probably wouldn't recognise a Pad Thai if it smacked them round the face.

I never liked Tom Yum soup until eating it in Cambodia. The mix of flavors was perfect and suddenly I saw the appeal.

Yeah I totally get that.

My first pad Thai in the U.S. was among the best I've ever had, though in general the standard there isn't great.

Also perhaps even weirder the very best of these dishes

Grilled pork neck spicy salad

Grilled beef spicy salad

Spicy squid in chilie sauce stir fry

Green curry with pork stuffed squid

I had in the U.S.

  • 4 weeks later...

We have one occasionally at a roadside place here in Prasat Surin after we've done our 5 rounds of the local lake. B/f orders. Yummee.

rice noodles ..... carbs .. which is sugar

fried in terrible seed oil

tamarind sauce .. also loaded with sugar

usually has added palm sugar

peanuts .. high on the allergy trigger list

possibly farm raised shrimp...( sitting in the open air all day )

same for the bean sprouts ( sitting in the open very succeptable to salmonella )

and.... don't forget Mr. or Mrs. Somchai picking their nose and washing paltes ans spoons with buckets of water from where ?

Because you never leave your barstool.

My wife makes one of the best, we have it for brunch about once a month, rotated with a big American breakfast with home fries.

You have to know the restaurant and also know what good Pad Thai is. Otherwise you do get something that is well "not nice".

Less than a month ago (the forum reverses the day/month figures), but agreed, it was an unnecessary and stupid troll.
