THAILAND - Thai business leaders from the Thai Chamber of Commerce have thrown their support behind the government's strong stance in the ongoing border crisis with Cambodia. They assert that national security and citizens' safety are paramount, even amidst significant economic repercussions. As tensions rise, they urge swift conflict resolution to restore global confidence and protect trade and investment.

The border conflict has led to casualties among Thai soldiers and mass evacuations, significantly impacting economic activities in the region. Despite promoting peace, the Thai Chamber of Commerce acknowledges the government's right to self-defence under international law following repeated breaches by Cambodia. They stress that protecting sovereignty is essential and should be prioritised over economic concerns.

Chamber chairman Poj Aramwattananont highlighted the business community's position, stating that the security of the nation and its people must come first. While the economic cost is severe—with border checkpoints closed for over six months—business leaders urge clear international communication to maintain Thailand's global reputation. They emphasise Thailand's role in not being the aggressor in this conflict.

Looking forward, the focus remains on resolving the issue quickly to mitigate economic damage and assure both domestic and international investors. The Chamber continues to push for peace, urging the government to find a resolution that balances security and economic stability. The restoration of border activities is essential to return confidence to an already strained economy.

Key Takeaways

  • Thai business leaders support government action to protect sovereignty.
  • Economic impacts include closed borders and lost investor confidence.
  • Swift resolution and clear communication are essential to restoring stability.
