Russia Poses Acute Threat, New MI6 Chief Warns In First Speech

Britain’s new MI6 chief will issue a stark warning on Monday that Russia poses an “acute threat” to UK security, as she delivers her first public speech since taking charge of the Secret Intelligence Service.

Blaise Metreweli, the first woman to lead MI6, is expected to describe Moscow as an “aggressive, expansionist and revisionist” power, accusing it of waging hybrid warfare against Britain and its allies. That threat, she will say, extends far beyond Ukraine and includes cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns and suspected drone activity near critical national infrastructure carried out by Russian proxies.

Ms Metreweli, who took over from Sir Richard Moore on 1 October, will insist that the UK will continue to apply pressure on President Vladimir Putin in support of Ukraine, despite Western sanctions failing to force Moscow to abandon its war aims. While sanctions have damaged Russia’s economy and pushed exports towards China and India, they have not altered the Kremlin’s determination to secure territory and long-term influence over Kyiv.

Technology will be a central theme of her address. A veteran of MI6 since 1999, Ms Metreweli rose through the agency’s real-life Q Branch — its highly secretive technology and innovation arm. She is expected to urge officers to master digital skills alongside traditional espionage tradecraft, telling them they must be “as fluent in Python as we are in multiple languages”.

Her message reflects a changing intelligence landscape, where biometric surveillance and data analytics have eroded the effectiveness of false identities and old-fashioned cover stories. In a world of mass data and instant identification, MI6 must adapt to remain operationally relevant.

Her warning will be echoed by the UK’s Chief of the Defence Staff, Sir Richard Knighton, who is also speaking on Monday. He is expected to call for a “whole of society approach” to national defence, warning that the security environment is more dangerous than at any point in his career.

Sir Richard will argue that Russia seeks to weaken and ultimately destroy Nato, and that deterrence must extend beyond the armed forces to include industry, universities, infrastructure and public services. He will also announce £50m for new defence technical excellence colleges, as debate intensifies over how Britain prepares for a more hostile world.
