So what brought you here — and what's keeping you?

Been thinking about the different types of foreigners who end up living in Thailand long-term. You see the same recognisable patterns over and over: the retiree stretching a pension, the guy who came for a holiday and never left, the English teacher buying time, the businessman in his Bangkok bubble, the digital nomad in a café.

Most labels like this feel like they were written about someone else. The retired guy who's genuinely happy and integrated into his community doesn't see himself as the same category as the guy nursing a beer and moaning about traffic. The person who came here after a burnout and built a decent life doesn't fit neatly alongside the one who's running from something.

Which brings me to the question: how do you actually describe why you're here and what kind of expat you've become? Not the version you'd tell a stranger on a plane, the honest version.

Are you mostly integrated or mostly in a farang bubble? Did you come here with a plan or did you just drift in and stay? Has your reason for being here changed over the years?

I'll go first: came for work, stayed because the quality of life was better than what I was going back to, then of course I met a Thai woman and that pretty much sealed my fate...lol

No grand plan. Not sure which box that puts me in.

Venomous, best left alone, will strike when threatened ! can be fatal.

I came here my 30's, to work offshore Songkhla for Chevron.

I was fed up with travelling back to Australia on my time off, decided shack up with a beautiful young Thai chick, buy a house and call Thailand home.

I taught at a university in Japan for 15 years. In those days, we had 5 months of paid vacation (before the Bubble burst...) and I used to spend two or three months here in Thailand, mostly scuba diving on the islands.
When I retired from the Uni, I moved here and started a business. Ran that for 10 years in Chiang Mai before deciding I wanted to just relax and play, which is what we've been doing for the past 12 years, traveling around the North, taking some dive trips to other countries, and generally just aging peacefully.
I like Thai living. 🙂

Brought me here - Job posting

Keeps me here - A good woman

Hot P4P sex. Isn't that why all expats come to Thailand. (no I'm not serious)

I have a Thai family.

Economic arbitrage brought me here. I moved from a high cost, modest income country to one where my pension and investment earnings afford me a better lifestyle.

What's keeping me here? A Thai GF 23 years younger than me, and a far more varied day than I could experience in Australia, captive to nanny state regulation.

Has it occurred to you like calls out like? Or is it opposites attract?

Perhaps you enjoy risk.

I came here to teach English. Still here and still teaching, 21 years later.

Landed in Bangkok for two days before going to the Philippines for a job interview.

Went to the Hard rock cafe in Bangkok and met Nong.

Still here.

That was 25 years ago,so far so good.

Came here with my American ex.

Currently with a nice Thai woman.

Only lasted about 3 months here with the ex after arriving.

Everybody’s happy.

I am not Fred wiggy, so that’s about as long as the story goes.

Came here (south-east Asia) 25 years ago for a better climate for my weak lungs (Bronchiectasis).

Still here and my lungs thank me for it.

An aluminum can filled with kerosene.

Weather and simplicity, and the wife is easy.

Haven’t morphed into anything, still the exact same person though just a bit older.

Mostly Thai bubble with an occasional English speaking run-ins.

Easy lifestyle and weather. I was going to say food but although I love it, I rarely eat Thai food now

The reasonable cost of living, large amounts of very pleasant and lighthearted people, and the fact that I spent years doing everything in my power to get away from America. And that was two decades ago, it's only gotten worse and gone way downhill since.

The weather, absolutely nothing else.

If the sun didn't shine in Thailand no one would entertain ever visiting or living here

Fully agree also add in medical care and no f ING snow. Although I do miss going to hockey games but sadly if I was back in Canada I couldn't afford them anyway.

What brought me here--my Thai partner. What keeps me here--my Thai partner, the good weather, a home twice as big as what I could afford in the US, good standard of living, lots to keep me busy, a getaway condo in Bangkok we both enjoy going to, good shopping, restaurants, health care, easy travel to visit other Asian countries, etc.

So Nongs of "mature age" now ?

We don't need to know if it's a "open relationship",it's none of our business, although I would hazard a guess it is , disgraceful , especially cheating on your partner

, but hey that's a whole new thread and we don't have time on here , we don't need to know but thankyou.

Came here at age 17 as a foreigner exchange student. I lived with an amazing Thai family who changed my life, and I fell in love with the people and culture. Returned for a college exchange and again to teach English for a year in my 20's. Both times I spent considerable time with my Thai family. I always wanted to come back to Thailand, but life got in the way. I lived in several other countries, and enjoyed traveling, but always wanted to return to Thailand.

Brought my husband back with me to visit 15 years ago and he fell in love with Thailand as well. Five years ago we retired and spend 6 months a year here. We still spent considerable time with my Thai mother and father. I still love Thai people and the culture although I have to admit that it is changing, and I preferred the way it was in the past, but everything changes. :)

No it is none of your business but since you make it personal i feel i should defend myself.

Care to explain?

Wow i just wish we could have had this conversation in person!

Brought me here - My employer.

Keeps me here - My employer.
