Trump Says U.S. ‘Has To Have’ Greenland After Naming Special Envoy

image.jpeg

Donald Trump has reignited diplomatic tensions with Denmark after appointing a special envoy tasked with advancing U.S. interests in Greenland — and bluntly declaring that America “has to have it.”

Speaking to the BBC, Trump said the vast Arctic island was essential for “national protection,” insisting U.S. control was necessary to counter growing Russian and Chinese activity in nearby waters. He dismissed suggestions the move was driven by mineral wealth, saying the issue was “national security.”

Trump named Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland, saying he would “lead the charge.” Landry later described it as an honour to serve in what he called a “volunteer position to make Greenland a part of the U.S.”

The appointment immediately sparked outrage in Copenhagen. Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, said the move was “deeply upsetting” and warned Washington against undermining Danish sovereignty. The Danish government said it would summon the U.S. ambassador for an explanation.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also pushed back, stressing that the island’s future would be decided by its people alone. “Greenland belongs to Greenlanders,” he said. “Our territorial integrity must be respected.”

The European Union quickly lined up behind Denmark, with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledging “full solidarity” with Copenhagen and the people of Greenland.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with control over domestic affairs but not defence or foreign policy. While many Greenlanders support eventual independence from Denmark, polls show overwhelming opposition to becoming part of the United States.

Trump’s move underlines that his long-standing ambition to control Greenland — first aired during his initial presidency — remains undimmed. It also fits a broader pattern of aggressive U.S. posture in the Western Hemisphere, following his administration’s escalating confrontation with Venezuela.

Envoys do not require approval from host nations, allowing Trump to apply pressure without formal diplomatic channels — a tactic likely to further strain relations with allies as Arctic competition intensifies.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump says U.S. “has to have” Greenland for national security reasons

I think it's become quite obvious by now that the people who elected him had no idea who they elected and they grossly over estimated his potential as a decent leader.    He gets an F grade

Everyday there's an additional act that is added to Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Trump Circus. It's getting just a bit top heavy at this point. However the ridiculousness of it all never ceases to amaze.

I can only imagine what they're saying and thinking in truly civilized nations around the world.

This is stupid on so many levels.

Denmark has had no problem whatsoever with massive cooperation the USA including US military bases.

They would be open to even much more as long as the US is a trusted ally, rather than an off the rails new enemy led by a Putin lover.

So what's behind this?

Trump positioned himself with the ideology of might makes right dictators especially Putin and against traditional US allies, small l liberal European democracies.

So Denmark is part of Europe and now an enemy of the U.S.

Even weirder the vast majority of Americans DO NOT support this massive policy shift.

Yes he was elected but not to do crap like that.

Confirmation of his delusional state of mind !

Perhaps Trump is channeling his inner Valley Girl.

I just "have to have" that necklace!

Funny he calls others piggy.

On the other hand, isn't most everything he does these days an attempt at distraction from:

The Epstein scandal

His obvious rapidly advancing dementia

Americans failing to be gaslighted by the his lies about the economy

Nobody is willing.

He's surrounded himself with sycophants and any peep of dissent means getting fired.

As Denmark and the USA are in NATO and Trump-America is threatening Denmark, will NATO invoke Article 5 against itself?

And they say the Russians and Chinese are the territorial aggresive ones.

The no wars president , attacks Iran , Panama channel, bombs some Afican countries about to take on Venezuela , starting with piracy , later Cuba AND wants Greenland.

The good he is doing is not in balance with all the bad.

For once the EU monster is right , but again nothing to back it up with.

The cabinet would need to do that and they're picked for loyalty not competency. That's why.

I'm Trump supporter,  if it be known. :giggle:

But i think he is going a Tad to far, with Green land ( Trump-land )

I fear that Trump cannot stand the thought of the world continuing without him.

Yes a lot of this about legacy.

He's naming things Trump like it's going out of style.

He already named a memorial (Kennedy center) after himself.

He wants to see his hoped for posthumous memorials before he can't see anything.

I'm surprised there aren't already Trump High Schools in maga fascist states.

He doesn't need support. He's acting like a dictator.

But, at least the world now see's it, and fortunately, he is 79 and showing his dementia, he is on the point of no return...........🤗.........

What a sad excuse for a president.  How very  pitiful it is to try try and excuse his obvious complete and total bonkers daily  BS from ballrooms, to nasty plackards, to take over Canada and Greenland, to suck Putins rear end, to put his name above Kennedy for the Kennedy center, attack venzeuela and who knows who/what/where is next.

A few are finally putting down the kool aid cups and finding the balls to admit "gee we were wrong".  There is a ticking time bomb sitting /sleeping in the oval office with his tiny fingers on the nuke button and meantime his supporters want to pretend this is all very normal.  It is not.

The man child has truly gone over the edge. The only question is will the "republicans"  and voters pull their heads out of their rear ends , pay attention, grow a brain and a spine, and attempt to put a stop to the crazy clown car before it runs the entire world into a very deep ditch.

As someone previously posted, this will all be removed when adults move back in to the White House.
