A tragic incident in Tondo, Manila claimed the life of a 12-year-old boy and severely injured his companion after an explosion involving two firecrackers. The Manila Police Department reported that the boys discovered a piccolo and a big triangle firecracker and attempted to ignite them with a disposable lighter. The explosion resulted in the instant death of the child carrying the big triangle, while his companion sustained injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

Prior to this incident, piccolo and other hazardous firecrackers have been banned by the Philippine National Police for their excessive gunpowder content and rapid fuses. Despite the ban, illegal firecrackers remain available in the market, prompting intensified police crackdowns that have resulted in the confiscation of illegal fireworks worth about P500,000 in Manila alone. However, these continued challenges highlight the difficulty in fully controlling the circulation of prohibited pyrotechnics.

Following the explosion, the local police conducted a thorough investigation and secured the area. The bereaved families were provided financial assistance by the Manila Department of Social Welfare, while the injured boy's medical care and rehabilitation are being supported. Authorities continue to classify the case as a "death under inquiry," highlighting ongoing efforts to prevent similar future incidents.

Looking forward, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso reiterated city hospitals' readiness to handle firecracker-related injuries. As New Year’s Eve approaches, the government has intensified the establishment of designated firecracker zones to ensure public safety. Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. of the Philippine National Police emphasized the focus on public safety, affirming robust measures against illegal firecracker activities.
