Authorities in Suphanburi have raided an illegal fireworks production site after villagers raised safety fears, uncovering explosive material and preventing what officials said could have been a major disaster. The operation took place on 31 December 2025 in Phihan Daeng subdistrict, Mueang Suphan Buri district, following complaints about suspected unauthorised manufacturing of fireworks and firecrackers in a residential area. One person was arrested at the scene and large quantities of materials were seized for disposal.

The raid was ordered by Suphanburi district chief Sittiporn Khonghom, who assigned Acting Sub-Lieutenant Chaithat Jessadapakon, a district security officer, to lead the operation. Officers from the Mueang Suphanburi district volunteer defence corps, Mueang Suphanburi police and the Suphanburi branch of the Internal Security Operations Command jointly inspected the property. Inside, they found equipment used to manufacture aerial spinning fireworks known as talai, finished talai fireworks and a large quantity of explosive powder stored in 200-litre containers.

Local residents had previously alerted authorities due to fears of a possible explosion, citing past incidents involving fireworks factories in other areas. Their concerns were heightened by the proximity of the site to homes, raising the risk of injury or property damage if an accident occurred. Officials confirmed that the operation was conducted in response to these reports and aimed at preventing a repeat of such incidents.

The homeowner was taken into custody and charged with illegally manufacturing fireworks and talai without a licence. The offences fall under the Explosives Act B.E. 2489, which regulates the production, possession, and use of explosive materials in Thailand. Authorities also coordinated with explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) officers to remove and destroy the seized explosive materials safely.

Mr Sittiporn said the arrest was intended to halt potentially dangerous activities before they led to loss of life or widespread damage. He noted that fireworks factory explosions had occurred frequently in the past and stressed that proactive inspections were essential to reduce risk. He added that the district has implemented stricter monitoring measures and urged residents to report any suspicious activity to local administrative offices.

Matichon reported that officials said inspections in the area would continue as part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety. Information provided by residents will be used to guide further investigations and enforcement actions. Authorities reiterated that community cooperation remains key to preventing similar incidents from happening again.
