Chronic Acid Reflux Treatment.

Featured Replies

I've been suffering from chronic acid reflux in recent years. I tried omeprazole, apple cider vinegar and raised my pillow. This has relieved it at times but it returns as bad as it ever was. I don't drink tea or coffee, I gave up smoking just on 50 years ago and I only drink one large beer daily. Has anyone successfully over come acid reflux and what method did you use to nullify this nasty medical condition. Thanks.

Another thing to try is H2-inhibitors (like Famotidine). They sell them in Thailand.

They say eating VERY slowly helps. Easy as it sounds, it's something I can barely manage though. I've had some success in keeping my (mild) reflux at bay by chewing gum throughout the day and especially after meals. I guess chewing gum mimics taking longer to eat.

The OP doesn't say if he's been to the doctors regarding his problem. Or does he just self medicate?

Personally have not had the issue, though know folks who have had success with probiotics such as kimchi and kefir.

I just purchased Famotidine and I'll see if my condition changes in the next few days.

I've been to doctors in Australia, the UK, Malaysia and Thailand, I did feel better taking their advice but in no time my acid reflux returned. So I decided to self medicate. I've stopped eating fried food, I don't drink tea or coffee and I've drastically reduced my beer intake to one large bottle mid afternoon.

I had reflux issues a few months ago. I made a gastroscopy just to be sure.

Everything was fine. The recommendations from the doctor in BKK Hosptal CM:

  • Try to drink 2 liters of water per day

  • Don't eat anything 3 hours before going to bed

  • Avoid fatty, oily and spicy food

  • Reduce or stop drinking coffee

Before I never drank that amount of water, I loved to eat spicy. 2-3 big milk coffees in the morning. And I ate after dinner also cookies / cake etc.

I also reduced the amount of drinking milk in general (I just love it).

I followed the recommondations. And have since then no issues anymore.

Here and then if I really feel like it, I do have a cookie or some milk in the evening. I just try to keep it on lower amounts.

Stop drinking beer, or that brand, and see what happens.

I started taking Famotide at lunchtime yesterday, I then took one prior to going to bed. From now on I will only take one prior to sleeping. This morning I do feel better but I'll wait for one week to see if I'm on the road total recovery.

Have suffered from acid reflux for years. Started taking a 20mg Nexium after I eat, once a day. Haven't had a problem ever again. No matter what I eat or drink. 15 years now. Give it a try, it might work for you!

How much does Nexium cost in Thailand as it's quite expensive in other countries.

This is what I wrote: Do not know how effective this will be, time will tell, but yesterday the wife went to a local doctor who specialises in stomach problems and he gave her Mucosta, Raboprazole and Doiz tablets. Looking them up on the internet all are for treating gastritis, GERD and gastric ulcer, the causes of reflux apparently.

Those drugs worked very well for my wife, symptoms mostly cleared in 5 days, kept the treatment for another week and completely cured her.

Firstly thanks for your advice, I'm feeling remarkably well considering I'm only on the 2nd day of Famotitdine treatment. I've noted the advice on your post and I will try what you stated if Famotitdine doesn't totally cure me of acid reflux.

Yes, had a gastroscopy, had ulcers diagnosed and successfully treated. But worse a fairly long hiatal hernia and Barett Oesophagus were also diagnosed. So for the past 10 years I had daily 20mg Omeprazole and repeat Gastroscopies to check for dysplasia. Taking the medication after lunch an avoiding large heavy dinners prevent reflux and heartburn at night. I think anyone with a long history of reflux/heartburn should get a gastroscopy as there are treatments for dysplasia, which can prevent cancer. Oesophagus cancer is grim.

I had acid problems for decades. It got to the point where I would sometimes wake up in the middle of the night gasping for air. Beyond that it leads to problems that one might not necessarily connect with the condition, such as recurrent sore throats and sinus problems. Quite insidious.

I don’t have the problem any more. I decided to up-level my health in general a few years ago:

  • Omeprazole 20mg, originally every day but now 3x/week.

  • Completely stopped drinking beer. I still drink, but not beer.

  • Cut out most — but not all — junk food. I still have ice cream or M&Ms once in a while but I don’t graze on chips etc. like I used to.

  • Started exercising regularly. That includes a mixture of gym and walking.

  • Eat less. I am not generally all that concerned with strict diets but just eating around 1500-2000 calories per day.

I have no acid problems at all now.

The lesson I took away is that looking for the one magic pill wasn’t the right approach for me. I credit the general up-leveling of health.

I also had a gastroscopy to check on my gastric reflux situation and the surgeon found that I had Barrett's oesophagus which had gotten quite bad, so he immediately put me on omeprazole 20 mg in the morning and 20 mg before bed, along with issuing other edicts such as: –

Cut out the coffee.

Cut out the spicy food.

Cut out the alcohol and also cut out foods such as onions, bell peppers, chilis and so on, all of which I tried, and it was very difficult I can tell you.

But two things really did it for me and the first one was to quit my highly stressful job and retire to Phuket and secondly was to try something else that was recommended to me, namely d-limonene capsules which I took twice a day.

You may wish to check those out online because there is information about how this capsule can help with gastric reflux, and it certainly helped me, and when I went back to NZ for a checkup a few years later, the surgeon was amazed at the improvement, even though I told him I was still drinking alcohol, eating spicy food and all the food he didn't recommend – – he was so amazed that he got online to check it out and actually ordered some for a friend of his, whom he was treating for the same condition.

I've had no problems in the more than 10 years I've been free of it, although I still keep a container of d-limonene capsules handy, just in case.

I will seek out information on d-limonene for you as I'm sure I have kept some, and will send it to you via a PM.

PS. I was going to try Nexium, but at the time it was extremely expensive, so I tried other avenues and d-limonene was the one that I settled on, and I'm so glad I did.

PPS. Here is the link for the d-limonene capsules.....I thought I would post it as it may help others.

No need for Nexium, it is one of those products where labs do a slight tweak of old molecules just claim a new patent and sell their stuff at a premium. I use Omeprazole (Miracid) which it dirt cheap and 20mg do the job for me.

Thanks for the D-Limonene lead I'll follow up on that, after my next Gastroscopy next week (refunded 100% by Cigna).

Had a similar problem and around 20 years ago and my New Zealand gastro surgeon inserted a tube that inflated and expanded my oesophagus. I had been having several choking episodes that triggered my consultation.

The rational as I understood it, was that the oesophagus is partly cartilage. I had a naturally narrow oesophagus and as I had put weight on as well it had been further constricted (fat in your body expands inwards as well as the visible outwards). If I recall correctly it was taken up to 1.5x and would settle back a little

The upshot was, I have had no problems with choking since and I immediately ceased having continual heartburn and acid reflux.

I had been taking all sorts of pills and tablets that enabled me to ease the haertburn and since that time have never taken them.

Not sure that would help everyone but I would certainly suggest looking into it if you have a serious problem. The heartburn and acid reflux was really affecting my quality of life and it was so good to find that cured.

I just had some ramipril added to my BP tabs and they have caused my reflux to get worse even tough I am taking lanzoprazil, whereas reflux has been ok .i am thinking of reducing ramipril and just Amlodipine

Cook at home only then you can control what's in it

At the risk of being sniggered at, I started the Keto diet a few years ago, at age 71. The aim was to reduce blood pressure and sugar, it worked. But in addition, my arthritis went away and, acid reflux disappeared. No meds for many years until very recently. Long term use of Omeprazole is harmful, to be avoided.

  • 2 weeks later...

My reflux has improved

And no longer need lameprazole or any ppis ,I just need to eat lighter meals in the evenings ,I can sleep flat now on my back ,see how long this lasts

I don’t drink booze either
