Hi,

a Thai friend of mine is returning to Thailand after a streak of bad luck. Knowing her, she will be okay, but she is presently looking for a way to get to support herself. I wanted to suggest something I think worthwhile, but would like to hear the opinion of other first. She is a first class beautician (including hairdresser). Because she has no funds to start a place yet, I thought maybe she could advertise to the foreign community as a travelling beautician. She would come to your house, do your hair or face or both and you would not have to go out. What is your opinion on this? Is there sufficient interest here? Would it be financially feasible? Do you LIKE to go out to have your hair done or would you prefer to stay home?

First thing she'll need to find out (if she's expat) is whether expats are allowed to do that job (there are many we're not allowed to do) and if she can get a WP for it. That said, I'd probably vote "yes" dependent on price (or quality - I'd pay more for something truly fantastic) :o

i voted yes. as she is thai she will have no problem with work permits, and all she needs to do is let ladies here know, also contact Bangkok Network of Women, BAMBI, british club etc. i am sure that there are many ladies who would be more than willing to use her services.

Where is she going to be located Sutnyod?

She is from Sriracha, but I was toying with the idea of taking her in until she is through her rough spot. She will decline if she has no way of earning money (yes, she is Thai), so that's why I thought if I offer her to stay I might as well plant this idea into her mind of being a mobile beautician. I will wait for more people to give their opinion, before I tell her about it.

edit: typo

If the friend is interested and she's able to handle foreign hair (like mine is pretty thin and can't handle the stronger stuff they use here for Asian hair) I think it's a pretty good idea. :o

She is used to foreign hair (European, African) and uses only good products.

IF she is used to foreign hair then the best place for her would obviously be someplace with lots of foreigners. All the women here can attest how difficult it is to find a hairdresser used to foreign hair. Get her in that kind of area, promote, promote promote and it could go quite well,

Sure, give it a go! Print off some posters to stick up or pass out to people or just tell your friends. Once she works for a few, word of mouth will get out. Won't take her long to make enough dosh to open a small salon. Good on ya for helping her out, Sutnoyd.

A year or so ago, a hairdresser opened up a shop in Chiang Mai. He is trained in Australia, if I remember well, and used to foreign hair. The word spread very quick and within the shortest time he was fully booked and so far I know he still is.

I hardly go there or to any as I don't have much patience to sit for two to three hours, although I'm playing with the thought of having a perm again since two years ago.

So, yeh, I think she should definitely give it a go, if she's interested, and if she wants to become the local newspaper as that comes with the job as a hairdresser :o

Just curious sutnyod, where is she thinking of starting up?
