Europe Freezes: Six Dead, Hundreds of Flights Axed in Snow Chaos

Heavy snowfall and icy conditions have wreaked havoc across Europe, leading to widespread travel disruption and six fatalities. Hundreds of flights have been axed, leaving thousands stranded at major airports like Paris and Amsterdam, as severe weather sweeps through the continent. Authorities are warning this chaos could extend into Wednesday, with continued snow and ice predicted.

In France, three people perished in the Landes region due to treacherous black ice, while another two lost their lives in separate road incidents in and around Paris. Additionally, a tragic accident in Sarajevo, Bosnia, saw a woman killed when a snow-laden tree fell on her amidst heavy snowfall. The French government has issued a harsh warning to minimise travel, and it has placed 38 districts on high alert for additional snow and ice.

The airports are at a near standstill, and France's aviation hubs, including Roissy-Charles de Gaulle and Orly, expect significant flight cancellations on Wednesday to clear the snow. Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport is enduring a similar fate, with over 400 flights scrapped and concerns over de-icing fluid shortages. Passengers have described the scenes as "chaotic," with long queues and little information adding to their frustration.

Looking ahead, travellers will face continued uncertainty as the weather disrupts not only flight schedules but also railway services, with Eurostar experiencing major delays and cancellations. Dutch rail services briefly halted on Tuesday morning due to an IT failure, compounding the travel misery. Transport officials caution that conditions may remain challenging as the weather continues to batter the region, reported the BBC.

Key Takeaways:

Severe weather leads to six fatalities across Europe.

Major airports in Paris and Amsterdam cancel hundreds of flights.

Authorities urge caution as snowy conditions persist.

Meanwhile, in many parts of Australia, temperatures are forecast to be in the high 40's.

So pleased to be in Thailand right now!

Bit inconvenient for the global warming cabal.

Oh, I forgot, they now call it climate change. That pretty well covers anything that can happen.

Marbe Bar near 50 tomorrow

Saw an amusing thing on Facebook:

England calls it " the beast from the east", America calls it "snowmagedon", Germany calls it the " East freeze", Finland calls it Tuesday!
