The Thai Army and the Singapore Army on 10 January 2026 formally opened the joint military exercise Kocha Singa 2025, marking a renewed focus on digital-era warfare and urban operations. The opening ceremony took place at the 42nd Armoured Infantry Battalion training area at Sungei Gedong Camp in Singapore. The exercise aims to strengthen operational readiness and bilateral military cooperation between the two countries.

The opening was co-chaired by General Narongrit Khamphira, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Royal Thai Army, and Brigadier-General Wong Siew Ming, Chief of Staff of the Singapore Army. Kocha Singa 2025 is being conducted from 5 to 20 January 2026 under a long-standing training cooperation framework. Joint exercises under this programme have been held continuously since 1997.

This year, the Royal Thai Army deployed 120 personnel from the 9th Infantry Division, while the Singapore Army contributed 600 troops from the 42nd Armoured Infantry Battalion. The combined training focuses on command post exercises and tactical exchanges using modern systems. Activities include digital map planning, simulation-based training, live and static displays of small arms, and close quarter battle drills.

Additional components cover urban operations, field training exercises, and Judgmental Video Live Firing, a method designed to test decision-making under realistic combat conditions. Cultural exchange is also part of the programme, with a Muay Thai demonstration presented as a form of Thai soft power within a military setting. The exercise reflects an emphasis on integrating technology with conventional infantry skills.

In his address to participating troops, General Narongrit said Kocha Singa is a vital platform for enhancing military skills and exchanging professional experience between the two armies. He stressed that the true value of the exercise lies not in its duration but in the friendship and trust built over years of cooperation. He noted that this bond has been evident during border security situations and joint humanitarian assistance during flood disasters.

The assistant army chief urged all participants to learn from one another, show mutual respect, and strictly observe safety measures throughout the exercise. He added that the cooperation contributes to long-term regional stability and security. The joint drill is also intended to improve interoperability in complex operational environments.

Amarin reported that Kocha Singa 2025 will continue until 20 January, with both sides expected to conclude the programme with a full field exercise. The outcomes are intended to inform future joint training and reinforce defence ties between Thailand and Singapore. Further exchanges under the same cooperation framework are expected to continue beyond this year.
