Thai authorities have detained 30 Cambodian nationals for illegally crossing the Thai–Cambodian border in Chanthaburi province, citing severe economic hardship and hunger in their home country. The group, including men, women and children, was intercepted while attempting to enter Thailand through a natural border route, prompting security and humanitarian responses from multiple agencies. One alleged smuggler and a vehicle were also seized during the operation.

The arrests took place on Sunday, 11 January 2026, at around 11.30am, according to a briefing by Rear Admiral Parat Ratnaichaiyaphan, spokesperson for the Royal Thai Navy. The operation was carried out by the Chanthaburi and Trat Border Defence Command (KPCJT), with the Chanthaburi Marine Task Force working alongside local police investigators from Ban Plaeng Police Station and immigration officers from the Pong Nam Ron checkpoint. The group was found in Ban Laem Mai village, Thep Nimit subdistrict, Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi, while attempting to cross the border unlawfully.

Those detained comprised 30 Cambodian nationals, including 10 men, 10 women and 10 children, along with one Thai national accused of acting as a guide. Initial questioning revealed that the migrants had decided to enter Thailand despite knowing the risks and heightened border controls. They told authorities they were driven by long-term economic decline, high unemployment and food shortages in Cambodia, leaving them with few options for lawful employment.

Rear Admiral Parat said the Royal Thai Navy viewed illegal migration as a complex issue involving humanitarian, economic and national security dimensions. He confirmed that all detainees were treated in accordance with humanitarian principles, receiving food, drinking water and basic medical care. Officials stated that all procedures complied strictly with Thai law, including the Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearance Act 2022, from detention through to transfer for legal processing.

The navy added that marines continue to conduct border protection operations to safeguard national sovereignty and prevent illegal entry and transnational crime. Authorities also emphasised the need to prevent Thailand from becoming a target for human trafficking networks that exploit vulnerable populations. Cooperation between military, police and civilian agencies remains ongoing to manage the border situation effectively.

Officials reiterated that enforcement would continue alongside measures to ensure humane treatment of those apprehended.
