An 18-year-old student in Chai Nat turned the tables on a call centre scam attempt involving 50,000 baht on January 12. The student, Ikkyu, received a call from a fraudster posing as a mobile network manager, accusing him of laundering 8 million baht. The scammer, using fake documents, tried to convince Ikkyu to transfer nearly 50,000 baht for verification purposes.

Ikkyu grew suspicious during the call, lasting from 9am to 2pm, and instead of sending money to the scammer, he transferred it to his mother. While appearing to cooperate, he covertly contacted his father, who alerted the Mueang Chai Nat Police. Officers intercepted Ikkyu at the bank before any transaction took place and took him to the police station.

At the station, the scammer continued their ruse, requesting Ikkyu to use his camera to prove his location. Ikkyu cleverly maneuvered the situation and obtained the scammer's bank account number. Once he had this information, he ended the call and provided the details to the police. His mother, returning home alarmed from another province, was relieved to find her son safe.

Ikkyu had previously submitted personal documents for university applications, raising concerns about a potential data leak. His mother had reviewed the scammer’s documents, identifying them as fake, which prompted her hasty return. Despite suspecting the scam, Ikkyu played along to gather critical information, aiding the police investigation.

Authorities are now investigating the account number supplied by the scammer and aim to initiate legal proceedings. Meanwhile, a separate law enforcement operation led to the arrest of three call centre scammers in Bangkok's Chatuchak district, where police seized 1,000 methamphetamine tablets, reported The Thaiger.

Key Takeaways

  • The student's cooperation with police helped intercept the fraud attempt.

  • Authorities are investigating the scammer's bank details to pursue charges.
