The Election Commission (EC) in Thailand is currently investigating five online video clips suspected of breaching election laws. This action forms part of an ongoing review, with dozens more cases pending. Sawaeng Boonmee, the EC's secretary-general, noted these clips were assessed in a meeting involving the Royal Thai Police and the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society.

The clips reportedly contain electoral campaign material and are being examined for potential regulatory violations. If found in breach, the EC could take corrective measures, such as ordering the modification or removal of content. Cases threatening electoral fairness may be escalated to the EC secretary-general for further action.

Additionally, the E-War Room, a specialized monitoring group, has identified 34 other cases awaiting review. Of these, eight involve potential misuse of the monarchy in campaigns, while 26 relate to language that could be considered aggressive or provocative, indicated Mr. Sawaeng.

In another development, the EC has addressed inquiries from the Bhumjaithai Party regarding election and party laws, clarifying four key issues. The EC allows Bhumjaithai to present its personnel management policy, including naming potential cabinet members. Furthermore, non-party members appointed as campaign assistants can appear on stage if their roles are transparent but cannot feature on campaign posters.

The EC also confirmed that non-member assistants can join debates or vision-sharing events by media if they comply with all laws. However, these appearances must not coincide with official party policy debates, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • EC is investigating video clips for potential election law violations.

  • 34 additional cases are under review, with possible legal implications.

  • Bhumjaithai Party can appoint non-members as campaign assistants following guidelines.
