A nationwide test of Thailand's mobile phone emergency alert system will be conducted on January 20 at 2 PM. This exercise will involve messages sent to millions of users across all 76 provinces and Bangkok. It aims to simulate a national-level emergency alert for large-scale disasters, according to Theerapat Katchamat, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM).

The alert tones will automatically sound on mobile phones, displaying a message for about eight seconds, even if phones are on silent, locked, or set to vibrate. The alert will clearly indicate it is a test in Thai and English, with instructions assuring there is no need for panic. Only smartphones running iOS version 18 or Android version 11 or higher will support these alerts.

The DDPM announced this test with advance notice to minimize confusion and to help the public become familiar with the system. The department emphasizes that there are no links in the message to prevent potential scams, and the message will automatically disappear without requiring user action.

This alert system is a collaborative effort between the DDPM, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and mobile network providers. It has gone through three trial phases in 2025 at building, district, and provincial levels. Previously, it has been utilized in real situations like flooding in Thailand's North and South, conflicts at the Thai-Cambodian border, and health warnings related to PM2.5 air pollution.

Experts suggest that successful testing of this system could be critical in reducing damage and casualties during actual emergencies. The system's proven effectiveness in past events highlights the importance of nationwide adoption. Moving forward, this test will set the foundation for regular and reliable use in future emergency situations, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand will test its nationwide emergency alert system on January 20.

  • The alert will be available only on smartphones with the latest iOS or Android versions.

  • No action is required from users upon receiving the test message.
