Thailand Suspends Nine Tapioca Importers Over Quality Concerns

Thailand's Department of Foreign Trade has suspended nine importers after finding excessive moisture in tapioca chips, exceeding the Commerce Ministry's standards. The move aims to protect Thailand’s cassava prices and maintain the product's reputation. The suspensions follow inspections along the Thai-Lao border, a critical entry route for these imports.

Since December 2025, increased cassava output from Thailand and its neighbors prompted the department to deploy quality inspection teams. Between December 1, 2025, and January 14, 2026, infractions were discovered at various customs checkpoints, including Chong Mek in Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, and Bueng Kan, resulting in immediate suspension of import privileges for nine importers.

The department's director-general, Arada Fuangtong, highlighted the potential harm to Thailand’s reputation and domestic cassava price stability due to substandard imports. She emphasized that ensuring stringent quality control aligns with policies promoting stable cassava prices and protecting Thailand's stature in the global market.

Arada noted that inspections will intensify across four provinces—Ubon Ratchathani, Mukdahan, Bueng Kan, and Loei—over a four-month period ending March 2026. This period overlaps with the peak trading season, reinforcing the government's commitment to upholding quality standards.

Parallel inspections of export-bound tapioca chips will assure international partners of Thailand’s commitment to high-quality trade. This strategy not only protects domestic interests but also strengthens Thailand's position as a leader in the tapioca chip industry, opening doors to markets beyond China, such as Saudi Arabia, Japan, and New Zealand, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand suspends nine tapioca chip importers for exceeding moisture standards.
