Thai authorities have detained a Myanmar army officer who escaped from Karenni custody and crossed into Thailand, as security agencies monitor further escapees reportedly seeking to surrender. One officer was arrested in Mae Hong Son province, while contact has been made on behalf of 10 others who are believed to have entered Thai territory and wish to be returned to Myanmar under international procedures.

Police at Pratu Muang Station in Khun Yuam district confirmed the arrest on Monday, 19 January 2026. The detainee was identified as Lieutenant Pai Soc Du, a Myanmar army officer who fled from Kayah (Karenni) State and entered Thailand at about 5.15pm. He was handed over to Thai military authorities in the area after initial police custody.

The escape followed a mass breakout involving prisoners held by the Karenni Army (KA) in Kayah State. According to a senior Karenni military source, 59 Myanmar prisoners of war escaped from a detention site in Mae Sae/Mae Jae, Phasaung township, Loikaw district, at about 1.30am on 18 January 2026. The site is opposite Huai Ton Nun village in Khun Yuam district, Mae Hong Son province.

Those prisoners had been captured earlier during clashes near the Tu Chong Bridge while travelling from Bawlakhe to reinforce Myanmar troops in Phasaung. They were from Infantry Battalions 1, 14 and 130 under Light Infantry Division 66. The Karenni Army had detained them after a successful ambush.

Authorities later clarified that the total number of escapees was 82, not only the 59 Myanmar soldiers. The group also included Myanmar police officers and personnel from a Phasaung military camp who had previously defected to the Karenni Army. All fled from the same detention location during the early hours of 18 January.

Mae Hong Son Provincial Police Commander Pol Maj Gen Songkrit Ontakhrai said police received reports of the incursion from Pratu Muang officers. As the detainee was an active military officer who had contacted authorities to surrender, he was transferred to the 36th Ranger Regiment for handling in line with international law.

The Karenni Army has reportedly deployed forces to track remaining escapees. Intelligence indicates more than 10 Myanmar officers, including battalion commanders, deputy commanders, company commanders and non-commissioned officers, have entered Thailand. Intermediaries have contacted Thai officials on their behalf to arrange surrender, hoping Thai authorities will repatriate them to Myanmar.

Naewna reported that security agencies are continuing coordination between police and military units along the border. Further developments will depend on the surrender process and ongoing cross-border security assessments.
