The government aims to reform Thailand's Social Security Office (SSO) due to increasing criticism over its fund management and service inefficiencies. Labour Minister Treenuch Thienthong announced plans to make the SSO more professional and transparent, reflecting 31 years of operations needing adaptation to current societal needs.

The SSO has faced scrutiny for lack of transparency, questionable investment decisions, and inefficient management affecting over 24 million insured people. In response, the government and Labour Ministry are moving forward with reforms, focusing on boosting insured benefits and restructuring the SSO to enhance professionalism and accountability. An independent study has been commissioned to assess these changes' feasibility.

Minister Treenuch highlighted the need for the SSO to evolve, suggesting a more independent structure like the Government Pension Fund. The goal is to implement an efficient benefits system based on Big Data, ensuring responsible management of contributions from employees, employers, and the government. The reforms seek to improve the quality of life for insured individuals and the broader population through a professional body.

Despite these plans, Treenuch may lack the authority to implement changes without legislative support; thus, full reform might only proceed under the next government. SSO secretary-general Kanchana Poolkaew noted existing protections for insured members, with contributions resulting in diverse benefits like medical care, maternity leave, and disability support. Improvements aim to maintain such benefits sustainably while introducing necessary systemic changes, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • The government plans to reform SSO to enhance transparency and efficiency.
