Thailand’s Department of Medical Services (DMS) has confirmed that there are no current Nipah virus infections in the country, following social media speculation after a visit by the DMS Director-General to Rajavithi Hospital. The visit was part of routine preparedness planning, not an indication of an outbreak. The DMS urged the public to avoid sharing inaccurate information to prevent undue panic.

The Ministry of Public Health held a briefing on January 26 to address concerns about Nipah virus disease. Dr. Sophon of the Department of Disease Control stated that the situation in India is being closely monitored, where there are two confirmed cases among healthcare workers in Barasat, West Bengal. Thai authorities are coordinating with the World Health Organisation to track developments.

Thailand's Department of Medical Sciences has enhanced lab testing capabilities, promising results within 6–8 hours. The Department of Medical Services has convened experts to update clinical treatment protocols. It was reiterated that person-to-person transmission of the Nipah virus is challenging, easing immediate concerns of widespread infection.

Approximately 10% of Thailand’s fruit bat population carries the virus, a comparatively low figure next to India’s 40–50% in bats. No infections have been detected in pigs or local residents in bat habitats, and retrospective studies have not found the virus in encephalitis patients’ samples. Officials provided guidance on safety measures for those living near bat habitats to mitigate risk.

Looking ahead, Thai authorities continue to maintain vigilance, with strict monitoring and preventive measures in place to ensure public safety. They emphasize the importance of hygiene practices and caution in handling animals and food to prevent any potential transmission. Citizens are encouraged to stay informed through official channels, reported The Nation.

Key Takeaways

  • Thailand confirms no Nipah virus cases are present, despite rumors.
