Thailand Steps Up Human Trafficking Crackdown, US Praises Effort

Thailand has intensified its nationwide crackdown on human trafficking, focusing on call centre scam gangs and sexual exploitation, with authorities confirming expanded cross-border investigations and cooperation with foreign partners. The move aims to strengthen prosecutions, protect victims, and improve Thailand’s international standing, particularly under the US Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. Senior police say the efforts have already drawn praise from the United States.

The announcement was made at 10.00am on 30 January at the Immigration Bureau’s Training and Welfare Development Centre in Bangkok. Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot, Deputy National Police Chief and Director of the Anti-Human Trafficking Centre, spoke after opening the ITP Dialogue Forum 2026: “Joint Thinking, Joint Action – A Thailand Free of Human Trafficking.” He said Thailand is currently facing three serious forms of human trafficking that require urgent and sustained attention.

The first involves call centre and online scam networks, in which both Thai and foreign nationals are deceived and forced into cyber fraud operations. The second, and most widespread, is sexual exploitation, including child prostitution, sexual abuse and online sexual exploitation. The third relates to recommendations in the US TIP Report, particularly on improving victim identification amid an influx of foreign nationals, many linked to situations along the Myanmar border.

Pol Gen Thatchai said US representatives have been engaging closely with Thailand this year, reflecting recognition of progress, especially in suppressing call centre gangs. He noted that the United States has urged clearer and more consistent victim screening processes, an area Thailand plans to strengthen through closer work with US agencies and non-governmental organisations. The goal is to prevent information gaps between Thai authorities, US officials, and civil society, and to improve Thailand’s overall TIP tier status.

He added that Thailand has been widely commended internationally for its handling of scammer and call centre cases, but concerns remain about Thailand being used as a transit route for foreigners trafficked into scam operations. Such cases, he said, could affect the country’s image if not addressed through deeper international cooperation. Recent investigations include cases involving Japanese and Taiwanese victims trafficked to work in Tachileik, with scam networks increasingly shifting operations to West Africa and adopting more sophisticated methods.

Authorities are preparing to inspect a large call centre gang base discovered near the Chong Chom border checkpoint, working with foreign representatives to gather evidence and pursue cases. Human trafficking charges will be used as the primary legal basis, as they allow cross-border prosecution regardless of where suspects are located. Investigations will trace victims’ testimonies, financial flows, facilitators, and domestic and international networks.

Daily News reported that the Deputy Commissioner-General of Japan’s National Police Agency is expected to visit Thailand to discuss a case involving the trafficking of a 12-year-old girl for prostitution in Japan. Talks will also cover cooperation against Thai nationals committing offences in Japan, including visa overstays, prostitution and property crimes, which authorities say could damage Thailand’s international reputation.

Key Takeaways

• Thailand is targeting call centre scams, sexual exploitation, and victim screening gaps as its three most urgent human trafficking challenges.

• The United States has praised Thailand’s progress while urging clearer victim identification to improve TIP rankings.

• Authorities will expand cross-border prosecutions using human trafficking charges that apply even when suspects flee abroad.
