A newly implemented adaptive control traffic signal system in Bangkok has reduced average waiting times by half at two major intersections, Phra Khanong and Sukhumvit 71. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reports that waiting times have decreased to an average of six minutes. This system dynamically adjusts traffic signals based on real-time vehicle flow.

Previously, Phra Khanong was a notorious congestion point where Sukhumvit Road intersects with Rama IV Road and Sukhumvit 71. According to Wissanu Subsompon, Bangkok's deputy governor, the adaptive system adjusts signal timings to the actual traffic conditions, extending green lights when vehicle queues are long. This change has effectively smoothed traffic flow and minimized congestion.

Trials conducted during the initial phase demonstrated significant improvements. The enhanced system calculates traffic volume at both intersections and aligns signal timings to reduce jams. Consequently, the traffic cycle duration decreased from 12 minutes to just six minutes, with further enhancements planned. Traffic police continue to oversee operations in case of unusual situations, like breakdowns or emergencies.

The system employs CCTV cameras to detect and count vehicles. This data automatically adjusts signal durations in real-time, ensuring smoother traffic flow and shorter queues. By leveraging science and technology, Bangkok is making strides in traffic management to bolster police efforts and improve urban mobility, reported Bangkok Post.

Key Takeaways

  • Adaptive traffic signals in Bangkok have halved waiting times at key intersections.

  • The system uses real-time data to adjust signal timing, improving traffic flow.

  • Further optimizations are planned to continue reducing congestion.

Most of the western world have had computer controlled traffic lights for 20years with lane traffic counting capacity and in the best cases a look forward technology.

It ain't hard!!!! Only takes a half a brain which is lacking in this chaiotic mess.

The only way to keep traffic flowing is not automatic traffic lights but fewer cars of the road, dedicated bus lanes (with big fines for violations, ambulance rules and no siplor between 6am and midnight.
