Russian troops wipe out their own assault unit amid Starlink collapse

Russian occupation forces struck their own troops as a result of Starlink terminal outage on the Zaporizhzhya Oblast axis, ATESH partisan movement reported on Feb. 6.

RU's military depends on StarLink, and they are the biggest military threat to the world.

A decision to ban Telegram on home soil may have backfired on the Kremlin. Last week, Russia went on a blocking spree, banning a number of Western apps in an effort to push domestic users towards Max, an unencrypted state-owned app.

As reported by Bloomberg, pro-Russian military channels are now complaining that the sudden Telegram blackout — coupled with Elon Musk cutting Russia’s access to Starlink earlier this month — is now actively harming frontline operations.

As well as being the messaging app of choice for millions of Russian civilians, soldiers also use Telegram to liaise directly on the battlefield. The government said last week that it was banning Telegram for violating national law, and that the decision was for the "protection of Russian citizens."

yeah right ! and then they ban it ...ha ha not believable ..I'm sure the Russian military are perfectly capable of

developing and deploying secure communications that don't rely on social media apps.

This and the switch off of Starlink will certainly be the one last push Ukraine was needing for their victory over Putin 🤣

Russia Moves to Block Telegram, Pushes State App

Russia has begun restricting access to Telegram, escalating its efforts to tighten control over foreign tech platforms and steer citizens toward state-approved digital services.

The country’s communications watchdog, Roskomnadzor, announced the measures Tuesday, claiming the messaging app failed to remove content labeled as “criminal and terrorist” and did not adequately protect user data.

Officials said Telegram would face operational limits until it complies with Russian law. According to the state news agency TASS, the company has been fined 64 million rubles (about $828,000) for allegedly refusing to delete prohibited content and failing to self-regulate.

The restrictions triggered widespread disruptions across Russia. Outage tracking platform Downdetector recorded more than 11,000 complaints in 24 hours, with users reporting slow performance and connection failures. Telegram remains deeply embedded in Russian society, used by government agencies, media outlets, military personnel, and even the Kremlin itself.

Telegram founder Pavel Durov criticized the move, describing it as an attempt to force Russians onto Max, a state-backed messaging app now required to be pre-installed on smartphones and tablets sold in the country.

Max was developed by VKontakte (VK), a company Durov co-founded before leaving Russia in 2014. VK is currently state-owned.

Russia has previously attempted to block Telegram, notably in 2018. More recently, regulators partially restricted calls on Telegram and WhatsApp, citing fraud and security concerns.

Analysts say Moscow is studying China’s internet control model but continues to face technical challenges and domestic resistance. Experts predict many Russians will turn to VPNs and other tools to bypass restrictions.

Key Takeaways

  1. Telegram Restricted: Russia is limiting Telegram over alleged violations of content and data laws.

  2. State App Promotion: The government is pushing Max, a pre-installed, state-backed alternative.

  3. Digital Control Expands: The move reflects Russia’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on foreign tech platforms.

Russia’s drone campaign in Ukraine has been cut by up to 40 per cent, allowing Ukraine to regain territory after Elon Musk blocked Russia’s access to his Starlink satellite network, according to one of Ukraine’s most senior army chiefs.

Andrii Biletski, commander of Ukraine Third Corps, says the impact of SpaceX switching off Starlink in areas of Ukraine now held by Russia’s invading forces had been “enormous”.

“After the blocking of Starlink for the Russians, the level of their efficiency compared to ours has sharply decreased because Starlink is practically irreplaceable as a combat communication system,” the brigadier general tells The Independent.
