Ukraine deploys F-16 squadron with US, Dutch pilots

Ukraine has quietly formed a new F-16 fighter squadron that includes Ukrainian, American, and Dutch pilots to bolster air defense against Russian missile and drone attacks, according to Intelligence Online.

The unit was assembled in recent weeks under strict secrecy and is now playing a key role in defending airspace over the Kyiv region, one of the most frequently targeted areas in Russia’s aerial campaign. The squadron operates newly delivered F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, marking a major step in Ukraine’s transition to Western combat aviation.

According to the report, American pilots in the unit bring extensive combat experience, including deployments in Afghanistan and more recent operations in the Middle East. Dutch pilots, meanwhile, were trained at elite European air combat schools and specialize in advanced interception tactics and high-tech aerial warfare.

Western pilots reportedly signed renewable six-month contracts and operate outside Ukraine’s formal military rank structure. Their names do not appear on public rosters, underscoring the sensitive nature of the deployment.

The squadron’s primary mission is intercepting Russian Kalibr missiles, Kh-101 missiles, and Geran-5 drones. F-16s conduct both day and night patrols, using advanced radar and targeting systems to maximize coverage and reaction speed.

A major advantage provided by Western pilots is their mastery of Sniper targeting and reconnaissance pods, which allow aircraft to detect and track fast-moving targets over long distances, even in poor weather or darkness. While Ukrainian pilots are being trained on these systems, experienced foreign aviators currently provide critical operational expertise.

Ukraine’s Air Force signalled as early as 2023 that foreign pilots and technical specialists could serve if properly qualified. However, Kyiv has not officially confirmed the active combat role of foreign pilots in its air defence operations.
