Kasparov warns Russia collapse could trigger China land grab

Russian chess grandmaster and opposition activist Garry Kasparov has issued stark warnings about Europe’s security, NATO’s credibility, and the long-term consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine. In an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Kasparov argued that as long as Vladimir Putin remains in power, the war will not truly end—and that a future collapse of the Russian state could open the door to Chinese territorial expansion.

Kasparov dismissed NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense guarantee as largely symbolic, claiming Western leaders lack the political will to confront Russia militarily if the Baltic states were attacked. He warned that hesitation and half-measures from Europe have emboldened Moscow and prolonged the conflict.

The former world chess champion was also sharply critical of U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing him of prioritizing personal business interests over Ukraine’s sovereignty and broader democratic values. According to Kasparov, any peace deal that leaves Putin in power would only allow Russia to regroup and resume aggression, not just against Ukraine but potentially against Europe.

Looking beyond the war, Kasparov said the Russian “imperial model” is doomed to collapse. However, he warned that such a collapse could create new dangers, particularly from China. Beijing, he noted, has historical territorial claims stretching from Lake Baikal to Vladivostok and could move to absorb large parts of eastern Russia if Moscow weakens dramatically.

Kasparov also reflected on the legacy of slain opposition leader Alexei Navalny, arguing that Navalny’s strategy had already failed before his death and that genuine change in Russia will only follow a clear military defeat.

Ultimately, Kasparov stressed that Ukraine’s victory is essential—not only for its own survival, but for Europe’s security and the possibility of a post-imperial Russia.

Key Takeaways

  • Kasparov argues the war cannot end while Putin remains in power.

If Russia collapses, China may take over half the country: Interview with Garry Kasparov

I'm cool with China grabing Russian land.

One just needs to have a look at a map to identify the greatest threat to Russia.

China has never really accepted the old unequal treaty with Russia.
