Thailand’s Democrats rebound after near political collapse

Democrat Party, one of Thailand’s oldest political parties, has staged a political comeback after facing what many analysts described as a near collapse in recent years. Despite significant losses in support and parliamentary representation, the party managed to survive the 2026 election and maintain a foothold in Thai politics.

Founded more than 80 years ago, the party has long stood apart from other Thai political movements, many of which revolve around powerful families or individual leaders. The Democrats have historically maintained internal leadership elections and have undergone nine leadership transitions without dynastic control, making them one of Thailand’s most institutionalized political organizations.

However, the party’s influence has declined sharply in recent years. Once a dominant force in Thai politics and a major rival to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the Democrats found themselves squeezed between military-aligned parties and newer progressive movements. Their decision to join coalition governments led by Prayut Chan-o-cha in 2019 and the Thaksin-aligned Pheu Thai Party in 2024 triggered a serious identity crisis among supporters.

The numbers highlight the scale of the decline. In 2011 the party received more than 11 million party-list votes and held 159 parliamentary seats. By 2023, its support had collapsed to under one million votes and just 25 seats. Many long-time MPs later defected to other parties, leaving only eight constituency MPs before parliament was dissolved.

A turning point came with the return of former Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, who rejoined the party in early 2026 to help rebuild its support. Campaigning around his leadership and the message “trust Abhisit,” the Democrats positioned themselves as a moderate alternative between conservative nationalist forces and progressive parties.

In the 2026 election, the Democrats secured 22 seats and won 3.6 million party-list votes — a significant recovery compared with 2023 results. The party remained particularly strong in southern provinces, its traditional base.

Despite signs of recovery, challenges remain. The party must convince voters that centrist politics still has relevance in Thailand’s polarized landscape and avoid becoming overly dependent on Abhisit’s personal popularity as it seeks to rebuild long-term national influence.
