A group of about 70 students from over 17 different countries, are now in Phuket. They are based at Satree Phuket School with host families around the island. They are carrying out several community projects including volunteering at various locations, such as helping here at Child-Watch charity’s Holland House and a Safe House in Kathu for orphans and underprivileged children. They are also helping at Phuket Sunshine Village, Life Home Project, Habitat for Humanity, Phuket Has Been Good To Us, and others. The purpose of Up with People is to stimulate people to action in meeting the needs of their communities, while building bridges of understanding between people of different nations. One of their group, Celiana from Venezuela, told us more about what they are doing at the Childwatch’s Safe House & this week:

In Phuket they also have three public show performances at Phuket Rajabhat University at 7pm on Friday 24th and at 2:30pm plus 7:00pm on Saturday 25th of August. All the proceeds from the Up with People shows will be donated to the Satree Phuket School, for the school’s new educational building.

I’m at the Satree Phuket School s where a press conference for the ‘Up With People Program’ is held while they gave information about community service activities and performances expected to be taking place at Phuket Rajahbat University on the 24th and 25th of August

The ‘Up With People Program’ provides a 6 month international leadership program for young adults (ages 18-29) from many countries. Up to 70 participants from 17 countries travel 3 continents of North America, Europe, and Asia where they go to stimulate action in meeting the needs of their communities, countries and the world while building bridges of understanding between people of different nations. The participants are expected to arrive in Phuket on the 17th of August, residing with host families on the island for 10 days where they are given insights into the life, culture, food, and Thai customs.

Their stay will encourage an array of activities that deal with community services and cultural learning, training in leadership and life skills development, intercultural communication, host family living, and the performing arts.

On this trip in Phuket the ‘Up With Life’ program has collaborated with many institutions including Satree Phuket School, Child-Watch, Phuket Sunshine Village in Koh Sireh, Life Home Project, and Habitat for Humanity. The participants will work with the elderly, children with disabilities, and building and painting houses. Activities will include visits to a Sea Gypsy Village, going to Coral Island, listening to guest speakers on the effects of the Tsunami, and fun activities sponsored by a Rotary Club, like visiting Phuket FantaSea. The program emphasizes community projects and a global communication curriculum, inviting anyone interested to witness the activities they will be engaging in throughout their stay on the island.

Volunteers from 2 different countries in the ‘Up with People’ program, tell us about their experience working with the organization, from being a participant to becoming a volunteer, working for the program, furthering its vision:

Margo from France & Renee from USA

Best known for their musical performances, spreading messages of goodwill across nations, using music and dance to inspire community members to take action, the highlight of their stay is likely to be 3 cultural shows, one on the Friday 24th and two on Saturday 25th of August, by ‘Up with People’ participants and Satree Phuket school students. Held at the Phuket Rajabhat University, the tickets cost 100 baht for children, 200 baht for adults, and 1000 baht tickets for VIP persons, where all proceeds from the performances will be donated to the Satree Phuket School for the construction of the school’s new building, celebrating their 100 year anniversary. The building will also have a conference room big enough to accommodate a large number of people in case of emergencies like a tsunami hazard.

For more information contact Luis Petzhold, the Community Relations Coordinator, at 089-498-9750.

The ‘Up with People Program’ invites everyone to witness their community service activities and performances taking place on the 24th and 25th of August at the Phuket Rajabhat University. This is Genevieve reporting for Andaman News.
