Car Insurance

Featured Replies

If I drive the Thai car of a Thai friend, does the car insurance also cover the car and damage to third parties while I am driving or not? Thanks.

Motor insurance in Thailand follows the car, so provided that your friend has insured the car for physical damage and third party liability, you would be covered subject to the terms and conditions of the policy.

IMO - you need to check with the owner that the car is insured 1st class for any driver. Some insurance policies only cover named drivers and 3rd party damage/injury.

The coverage itself would not be voided if an un-named driver were at fault in an accident. The insurer would be entitled to impose a deductible of up to 6,000 baht against the claim for physical damage to the insured vehicle and third party liability claims could attract up to 2,000 baht deductible if an un-named driver were at fault. These are new rules imposed starting January 1, 2026 and require all private vehicle policies to name from one to five drivers. Older policies may have different provisions, but still coverage would not be voided for an un-named driver as long as the un-named driver had permissive use of the vehicle and did not run afoul of licensing, DUI or other exclusions.

That is an interesting piece of information, thanks.

My truck has only 2 drivers on its insurance. Other than those authorized (2) the case will be depends on the insurance decision.
