McConnell Breaks With Trump To Back NATO Alliance

Senior Republican Mitch McConnell has broken ranks with Donald Trump, joining Democrats to defend continued US membership in NATO after fresh speculation the White House could pull out of the alliance.

In a rare bipartisan show of unity, McConnell and Democratic Senator Chris Coons issued a joint statement praising NATO as “the most successful military alliance in history” and warning that American security depends on its strength.

Trump Dismisses NATO As “Paper Tiger”

The intervention came after Trump reignited tensions with allies, claiming NATO lacks credibility and suggesting the US could walk away.

“I was never swayed by NATO… I always knew they were a paper tiger,” Trump said, adding that Russian leader Vladimir Putin shares that view.

The president has repeatedly criticised European allies for failing to back US military action against Iran, branding them “cowards” for staying out of the conflict.

Despite the rhetoric, Trump also indicated that a full withdrawal remains “beyond consideration” — leaving allies uncertain about Washington’s long-term commitment.

Bipartisan Warning Over US Security Risks

Lawmakers from both parties moved quickly to push back.

McConnell and Coons stressed that NATO has underpinned US and European security for more than 70 years, cautioning that internal disputes should not undermine the alliance.

“Americans are safer when NATO is strong and united,” they said, urging allies to maintain cohesion at a time of global instability.

Democratic Senator Mark Warner echoed the warning, calling NATO the “cornerstone of American national security” and rejecting Trump’s criticism outright.
