Why won't Arab states shelter Palestinians?

Why Arab states won’t shelter Palestinians refugees fleeing war.

Credit: The author; Ryan Crocker, Politico; Muhi̇tti̇n Ataman, Foundation for Political, Economic and Social Research

If Palestinians are expelled from Israeli-occupied territory, where can they go. Israel’s Arab neighbours distrust them due to the destabilising elements of Hamas and Hezbollah. It is clear that Hamas (with leadership sheltered by Qatar) and Hezbollah (supported by Iran and Lebanon) are not acting militarily to support Palestine—they are causing chaos with the aim of destroying the State of Israel.

Of course, Israel will never be destroyed. It has lived in a state of perpetual war since well before its inception. Israeli governments seem to like that, it gives them something to do. And Israelis have come to accept a state of permanent war as normal. “This is not a drill” or however one says it in Hebrew.

Israel has become the only country to recognise Somaliland diplomatically. In addition to a commercial seaport for trade, one of their reasons was to create a ‘homeland’ for Palestinians. Out of sight, out of mind.

The term ‘homeland’ was first used by the Nazis, then by the South African apartheid governments, next by the Jews and finally by the US government. It is hard not to imagine Palestinians in Somaliland as the Beersheba of Abraham, a giant unfunded refugee camp, haunted by starvation and disease.

Certainly, this author has never heard any Israeli plan to create and fund an infrastructure to welcome Palestinian refugees. Somaliland would also be right to be concerned that Palestinians will likely bring Hamas on their coat-tails. It is not inconceivable to think an African Hamas would target Somaliland. Like Israel, they’d want it all for themselves.

Instability in Jordan and Lebanon caused by Palestinian militants have made Arab nations hesitant to accept refugees or empower militant groups like Hamas, which is seen as a political threat by Arab regimes. Some regimes fear that allowing pro-Palestinian sentiment to fuel local activism could lead to domestic unrest or the growth of Islamic extremists.

Hamas is viewed as an extension of the Muslim Brotherhood, which is deemed an existential threat by governments in Egypt and the Gulf. Egypt and Jordan fear that taking in large numbers of refugees would allow Israel to permanently clear the land of Palestinians, thereby defeating the Palestinian cause of equal nation status with Israel and exacerbating regional instability.

Many Arab nations have prioritized their own economic development, regional security alliances, and relationships with the United States and Israel over the Palestinian cause. This has become even more apparent as Israel/America’s attack on Iran caused Iran to target other Arab states. These countries would rather host US bases for economic alliance with the West than show any pan-Arab solidarity.

The so-called Arab street, a term for popular opinion in the Arab world, was behind the Palestinian cause, but it never really affected policy on the part of any Arab governments. As you go around the region almost all Arab governments were united on one point, which was that the Palestinians were a threat, a foreign population that should be weakened if not exterminated.

Pan-Arabic and Islamic identities were more dominant politically. Most Arabs were interested in Arab and Islamic issues. The Palestinian cause, both an Arab and an Islamic issue, was at the heart of these two identities. While some political actors support an an independent national identity, some others prefer to identify themselves as “Shiite,” thus otherising Sunnis. This is despite the numbers. Sunnis have 1.5B adherents, 90% of Muslims while Shia Muslims, 260M or 13%.

Of 193 UN countries, 57 are Muslim majorities. However, other Arab nations are too weak socially, vulnerable economically and dependent politically to take effective measures against the Israeli atrocities. This, despite the fact that 157 UN member nations have recognised a State of Palestine, where it has non-voting observer status. That State of Palestine is only a dream. Palestinians have been massacred in the majority of Arab countries, not just by Israel.

Arab countries, perhaps all Muslim countries, have no tolerance for dissent. This has made citizens fearful of speaking out in support of Palestinians and against Israel.

There are 5.6M Palestinians in Israel-occupied territories. In addition, there are 438,000 Palestinian refugees in Syria, 2.4M in Jordan, 250k in Lebanon and 250k in Egypt. What country can accept 10M Palestinians?

Historical factors and self-determination are also important components when looking at this issue. Palestinians want to live in their traditional, historical homeland. Their lands are in Palestine, their ancestors are buried there, their olive groves—the symbol of peace—are home.

So why should Palestinians be forced out of Palestine, as Israel has wanted throughout the ascendance of Zionism since 1897? Can we not accept that both Jews and Palestinian Muslims are both entitled to their own lands?

But just as Israelis have adopted the methods by which they have been persecuted and exiled so, too, do they want Palestinians to be outcasts and just go away.

Despite Hamas and Hezbollah terrorism, these are skirmishes in the bigger picture. Israel is clearly the principal aggressor not only in Gaza but in trying to force Palestinians out of the West Bank by state-sanctioned occupier violence.

Nobody wants them. They are the (knee-jerk) wandering Muslims of the Middle East. Distrusted and outcast. Nobody cares about them except Israel and we all know what that means.

Typical BS from the left. This can disproved via a simple web search. The left is nothing but a disinformation machine.

Earliest documented usage (17th century)

The Online Etymology Dictionary traces “homeland” to the 1660s, meaning:

“land of one’s birth or adopted home”

That entry is based on citations from 17th-century English texts where the word appears in that exact sense (native country).

Why couldn't the Palestians build their own Country in Somaliland ?

Build a successful democratic Country , like New Zealand or Australia or Israel .

Why do Palestinian's need to be eternal refugees living in squalor ?

Build themselves a Dubai or something

Only EU countries are willing to house terrorists with benefits. They also give red carpet treatment to ISIS leaders.

Define "they", please. Are you talking about the political leadership the PA, the Hamas militants or who, exactly?

Palestinians had a pretty good life in Gaza before Hamas, meaning before Israel's walls & checkpoints. Life in the West Bank was pretty idyllic with small-holdings, before thopse farms were stolen and free passage was restricted. That sounds like their place.

Why exile in Somaliland? You're right, with sufficient Israeli funding and expertise, the desert could bloom in Somaliland, too. Will Israel put its money where it puts its missiles?

Most of us want to know where our grandfathers' bones are buried.

Simple. Arab countries neither like nor trust Palestinians.

Because they keep attacking Israel .

They built tunnels instead of infrastructure .

Tunnels used to attack Israel .

Palestinians will never live in peace with Israel

Because they know exactly what they are like.

They are not as stupid as pearl clutching western liberals.

When Countries like Saudi Arabia Egypt. Jordan and even the Gulf states don't want the Palestinians peolle then you know something is not right being fellow Muslims should answer your question

Go back in history a bit. Palestine as a country was doing quite well until the 'western' countries decided to find a dumping ground for their horrible treatment of their Jewish populations. Looked like a fairly open space for those masses with dubious ancient religious connections. So load up the ships, hand them a bunch of weapons and, hopefully they'll kill each other off.

Very simplified but that's the bones of the mess.

You need to open your eyes, and read about this Topic that you mention, while paying more attention to the reality of it, as spelled out by people such as my good friend Noam.

Still, logic will be completely inadequate in helping you to see the light.

This is a well-known characteristic of the human brain, and you should not be held accountable for your blindness about Israel and Palestine.

You will never see the light.

This is a given.

They won't because they are aware of the hate and hostility that many have and also on considering the risk that terrorist or hostile elements, can sneak in amongst the palestinian refugees and thus either become sleeping cells or plot terrorist attacks on the west or western interests. Europe with the foolish policies in the European Union in Bruxelles, is paying a hefty price with reguler terrorist attacks by lone rangers who often entered as refugees, migrants or asylum seekers. Not saying all are bad, far from that., But how to make the difference ? As some come in with children and families but still plot hostile actions against the West. Sorry, please no offense to anybody but it's a fact. 🙏

You wont be able to

It was the arrival of the Jews in numbers from Europe which led to the creation of a modern infrastructure in the area. It was very undeveloped before then, but peaceful. There were many proposals to create a Jewish state in both East Africa and South America, but all were rejected.

the bloody Limey's need to step up and absorb this lot.

stick them in the council estates

God forbid nobody else wants them around

Jordan hosts the largest number of Palestinian refugees, with over 2.39 million registered with UNRWA. Other major Muslim-majority host countries include Syria (approx. 550,000+), Lebanon (400,000+), and significant populations in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Most Palestinians in these countries are recognized as refugees from the 1948 conflict or their descendants.

Wikipedia.

Or you could just use racism to say Muslims don't help Muslims.

The Australian Labor Government gave many Palestinians a visa with the most cursory of security checks when it all kicked off.

Big mistake in my, and many others opinion. But a vote is a vote, and that is all that counts, apparently.

I am able to do so, and easily.

The question is: Do I have the time, like eons, to wait for your understanding of what you might not know?

What you require, more than anything is some crystal clear AHA! moment.

Again, this will require eons, most likely.
