Kharg Island in Iran appears to have been attacked, hours before Trump’s ‘deadline’ for the country to reopen the Strait of Hormuz arrives, Iranian media is reporting.

Mehr News Agency, a state-run news organisation in Iran, reported a large explosion earlier this morning in the area of the vital island, which is situated in the Strait of Hormuz.

In a post on Telegram, they reported: ‘The American-Zionist enemy has carried out several attacks on Kharg Island, and several explosions have also been heard on the island.’

Iran’s most critical oil export hub in the Persian Gulf, has reportedly been hit by multiple strikes, Reuters reported citing Mehr News, marking a sharp escalation in an already tense standoff with the United States. Axios reported, citing an unidentified senior US official, that the US military conducted strikes on military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island.

Kharg Island accounts for almost 90 per cent of Iran’s oil exports. Large portions of Iran’s mainland coastline are too shallow to accommodate big tankers, making the island a crucial gateway for the country’s energy shipments.
