Cambodia unveils Asia’s first underwater museum

Cambodia is preparing to launch Asia’s first living underwater museum, a bold project that blends contemporary art with marine conservation. The S.E.A. Ocean Gallery, set to open off the coast of Kep, will feature 3D‑printed sculptures designed not only as striking installations but also as habitats for coral, seagrass and marine life.

Located around 8.5 kilometres offshore in a protected Marine Fisheries Management Area, the gallery is intended to evolve over time. Unlike conventional sculpture parks, these works will be gradually transformed by the sea itself, as coral attaches and marine species colonise the structures. The materials used — mineral and geopolymer composites — are engineered to mimic the complexity of natural reefs, offering shelter and biodiversity support while avoiding existing coral zones.

The initiative is being developed by Knai Bang Chatt by Kep West, in collaboration with Art for Kep and Marine Conservation Cambodia. The latter has been active since 2008, working to safeguard southern coastal ecosystems and establish marine fisheries management areas. Organisers say the gallery is not a gimmick but a long‑term vision: a decade‑long project beginning in 2026, with ambitions to make Kep a regional hub for art, ocean conservation and climate awareness by 2035.

Beyond its ecological role, the Ocean Gallery is expected to serve as a platform for contemporary art commissions. Themes such as memory, climate, myth, identity and justice will be explored through installations that are destined to change as the ocean reshapes them. This dual purpose — art and ecology — is what makes the project unique, positioning Cambodia at the forefront of innovative cultural and environmental initiatives in Asia.

For Kep, a town better known for crab markets, quiet coastal roads and faded villas, the museum promises a striking new identity. It could transform the sleepy seaside destination into a focal point for international visitors interested in both culture and conservation.

If successful, the S.E.A. Ocean Gallery may set a precedent for how art can actively contribute to environmental restoration, offering a model that other coastal nations could follow. As the countdown begins, anticipation is building for a project that aims to be as alive and dynamic as the ocean itself.
