Cambodia’s Ou Reang Ov district has celebrated the Khmer New Year with a striking culinary gesture – preparing and distributing 10,000 boiled duck eggs to visitors at the Sankranta festival.

The four-day event, held at Tonle Snguot Park in Tboung Khmum province, is jointly organised by the Ministry of Environment, the district administration and youth from the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia. On 15 April, crowds of residents and tourists were treated to the eggs alongside traditional games, dances and music.

Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth presided over the opening ceremony on 13 April, highlighting the festival as a symbol of peace and development. The celebrations have drawn large numbers, with Kampong Cham province alone welcoming nearly one million visitors on 14 April, according to official tourism figures.

Across the country, Khmer New Year – one of Cambodia’s most important holidays – has seen parades, cultural performances and exhibitions showcasing local products. In Phnom Penh, Siem Reap and provincial towns, merrymakers dressed in colourful costumes joined street festivities, underscoring the nationwide appeal of the holiday.

The Ou Reang Ov Sankranta festival reflects Cambodia’s efforts to blend tradition with tourism promotion. By offering local delicacies such as duck eggs and staging cultural games, organisers aim to strengthen community ties while boosting the province’s profile as a destination.

For visitors, the combination of food, music and dance provided a vivid snapshot of Khmer heritage. For authorities, the turnout demonstrated the growing potential of provincial festivals to attract both domestic and international travellers.

As the celebrations continue until 16 April, the sight of thousands of duck eggs being shared among festival-goers has become a memorable highlight – a simple yet powerful symbol of abundance and hospitality at the heart of Cambodia’s New Year traditions.
