Mystery as 10 US scientists vanish or die

Featured Replies

A chilling pattern has gripped Washington after ten scientists tied to top-secret US space and nuclear programmes have either vanished or died since 2023. Now the White House is under mounting pressure to explain what is going on. The cases span leading researchers, defence contractors and even a senior general — and still no clear answers.

The alarm was raised publicly this week when Karoline Leavitt was pressed on the issue. She admitted she had not yet spoken to relevant agencies but promised to “get an answer.” For critics, that response only deepened concern after years of silence.

One reporter pointedly asked whether that meant the government had not been investigating at all. The question landed heavily, especially given the high-level figures involved.

(Top L-R): Steven Garcia, William McCasland, Anthony Chavez, Melissa Casias, Monica Reza. (Bottom L-R): Nuno Loureiro, Carl Grillmair, Michael Hicks, Frank Maiwald, Jason Thomas.

At the centre of the mystery is William Neil McCasland, a retired Air Force general who vanished in late February. He had overseen classified programmes at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, a hub for advanced space and defence technology. His disappearance has raised particular alarm due to the sensitive knowledge he held.

But his case is just one of many. Michael David Hicks, a researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, died in July 2023 with no recorded cause of death or autopsy. Two others linked to the same facility — Frank Maiwald and Carl Grillmair — also died, with Grillmair shot dead during a suspected burglary in California.

The pattern continues with Steven Garcia, who vanished in August 2025 after leaving his home carrying a handgun. Authorities suggested he may have been a danger to himself, but friends strongly dispute that claim.

Two more disappearances followed weeks apart. Anthony Chavez and Melissa Casias were both last seen leaving their homes on foot in New Mexico before vanishing without a trace.

Elsewhere, Nuno Loureiro was shot dead in his Boston home while working on nuclear fusion research. Jason Thomas was later found dead in a Massachusetts lake after being missing for three months.

Another disappearance adds to the unease. Monica Jacinto Reza vanished while hiking last June, shortly after taking a senior role at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She had professional links to General McCasland, who funded her research.

The growing list has triggered fears about security, safety and oversight within America’s most sensitive scientific sectors. Questions are mounting over whether these incidents are connected — or simply a disturbing coincidence.

For now, the White House says it will look into the matter. But with ten cases and counting, the pressure for answers is intensifying fast.

4

Melissa Casias

Missing (Jun 26, 2025)

LANL employee, DOE advisory board. Vanished 4 days after Reza, same NM corridor as McCasland. Factory-reset her government phone before walking into the wilderness. Badge discrepancy her own family flagged.

5

Jacob Prichard

Dead (Oct 25, 2025)

AFRL Sensors Directorate, Wright-Patterson. Air/space reconnaissance programs. Killed his wife, then a coworker, then himself. No motive found.

6

Jaymee Prichard

Dead (Oct 25, 2025)

AFLCMC finance, Wright-Patterson. Killed by husband Jacob.

7

1st Lt. Jaime Gustitus

Dead (Oct 25, 2025)

AFRL 711th Human Performance Wing, TS/SCI clearance. Killed by Jacob Prichard. No known connection between them beyond AFRL.

8

Carl Grillmair

Dead (Feb 16, 2026)

Caltech/IPAC, NEOWISE pipeline, NEO Surveyor. Shot on his porch by a guy who had been arrested on his property 2 months earlier with an unregistered rifle -- charges dismissed 11 days before the killing. Caltech obituary said he "passed away suddenly" -- didn't mention he was shot.

9

Nuno Loureiro

Dead (Dec 15, 2025)

MIT plasma physicist, director of Plasma Science and Fusion Center. Shot by a former classmate who planned the operation for 3 years with burner phones and a pre-staged storage unit. Weakest direct AFRL link, but the operational planning of the hit exceeds what "personal grievance" typically produces.

Connected to LANL. "Disappeared during a walk."

One line is:

The real answer is Mondaloy.

Mondaloy is a nickel-based superalloy invented in the mid-90s at Rockwell Science Center by two women -- Dallis Hardwick and Monica Jacinto. It solves a problem that had stumped American rocket engineers for decades: how to build components that survive inside an oxygen-rich staged combustion preburner without catching fire or cracking. Every previous alloy either burned in oxygen or was too weak to hold pressure.

This single material is what allowed the US to stop launching national security satellites on Russian RD-180 engines. It's in the AR1 engine, military satellite launch vehicles, and hypersonic programs. L3Harris bought Aerojet Rocketdyne (the company that produced it) for $4.7 billion.

The entire institutional knowledge chain was three people:

  • Dallis Hardwick -- co-inventor, ran government qualification at AFRL. Died of cancer in 2014.

  • Monica Jacinto Reza -- co-inventor, patent holder, Technical Fellow at Aerojet Rocketdyne, later NASA JPL. Vanished June 22, 2025 while hiking Angeles National Forest. She was 30 feet behind a companion on a ridgeline. He looked back 8 minutes later -- gone. FLIR thermal imaging found a bear and other searchers but not a 60-year-old woman in a bright red shirt. Four days later, while helicopters were still searching, someone created a Find a Grave memorial for her listing "green burial" -- which requires a body. No body was ever found.

  • Maj. Gen. William Neil McCasland -- commanded AFRL, oversaw the $4.4B budget funding Mondaloy programs. Also named in the 2016 WikiLeaks Podesta emails as "very very aware" of UAP investigations. Vanished February 27, 2026 from his home in Albuquerque. Left behind phone, watch, glasses. Took a backpack, wallet, and a .38 revolver. FBI joined the search. Has not been found. He disappeared 8 days after Trump signed the directive ordering UAP file release.

The tech is classified under ITAR. JANNAF papers require US citizenship and clearance. There's no Wikipedia page. The information environment around it was deliberately thinned -- not erased, just never made public.

So: three people. One chain of custody. Two missing. One dead. The alloy is worth billions and is critical to US national security launch capability. Russia loses money if it works. China wants to steal it. Private contractors want to control it.

It's nice to see the lefties getting behind a wingnut conspiracy theory.

Or, as we call them, "Spoiler Alerts"

Yeah, as usual, everything that is not positive, is a conspiracy theory. You guys ain´t so smart, are you?

Apparently Chinese scientists have been disappearing too.

Possible explanations: Captured by aliens to teach them advanced technology. Or defected to Iran.

Damn. Where did I put my aluminum foil hat. I bet the wife used it to roast a chicken?

Are you sure it was a chicken she roasted, it might have been an alien in disguise?😀
