The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has announced that international flights will gradually transition from Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City to the new Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province. This move, beginning later this year, is aimed at establishing Long Thanh as a global aviation hub. Initially, long-haul international flights will be relocated, with Long Thanh expected to manage 19% of Ho Chi Minh City's international passengers by early 2027.

Tan Son Nhat, previously Vietnam's largest airport, will continue handling short-haul flights during the second phase from March 2027 through 2030. By then, Long Thanh will serve over 90% of international traffic. Post-2030, all international flights will operate from Long Thanh, allowing Tan Son Nhat to concentrate on domestic and non-scheduled international services, such as charter flights.

In preparation, the ACV has formed a first-tier subsidiary for the airport and launched training programs to ensure operational readiness. They've also partnered with South Korea's Incheon Airport Consortium for trial operations support and traffic forecasting. The final operational plan will see ACV coordinate efforts with other stakeholders to ensure a seamless transition.

Long Thanh's commercial operations are slated to start in late 2026, with construction deadlines set for the third quarter of the same year as per Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's directives. This strategic move positions Long Thanh as a future major international transit hub.
