Trump threatens to review UK claim to Falklands

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

The US is considering reviewing the UK’s claim to the Falkland Islands as a punishment for the country’s failure to support its war in Iran, according to a report.

In an internal Pentagon email, a US official floated the idea of reassessing Washington’s diplomatic support for European "imperial possessions," such as the Falklands.

The email also suggested suspending Spain from NATO - after its loud criticism of the war - and barring “difficult” countries from prestigious positions in the military alliance.

They didn't support the UK in 1982, so nothing changed.

  • Because what the US or that deluded idiot in the White House thinks about the Falklands is is not worth the paper we wipe our arse with.

Not true.

The U.S. supported the UK with military hardware and logistics during the falklands war.

I would've thought Two Tier Kier would relish the opportunity to give the Falklands away and even pay Argentina to take them.

I think 2TK is too busy trying to concoct more lies to save his skin. He is gone, whether he knows it or not.

No, all the time it was trying to convince UK to negotiate with Galteri in Argentina and come to a deal. Shultz was running a running around from Washington to Buenos Aires and London

The U.S. attempts to negotiate a peaceful resolution did not prevent the U.S. supplying, the UK with inflight fueling, ammunition, missiles, intelligence and communications:

Falklands is a pressure point for the UK – and the US kno...

This story will make greater waves in the UK than in the US, which for Donald Trump is an opportunity for leverage, Joe Inwood writes.

Why are our 'nationalistic' UK posters not rushing to defend their country's POV? 😃

The Falklands are a colonialist remnant of the defunct, brutal British Empire. All countries victimized by the rapacious British should seek reparations.

You defend Reagan too much. Basically you are suggesting the British should be grateful that the Americans chose to cut off arms supply to a fascist regime rather than tear up NATO delivery agreements.

The US support, as I have stated elsewhere, was grudging. Alexander Haig spent his time trying to get the Brits to leave the Argentines alone, before a young Joe Biden chipped in with a statement of principle.

The Americans let the British have (and we paid for them) 100 AIM 9-L Sidewinders on the 27 May 1982, nearly 2 months after Argentinian Marines tried to massacre Royal Marines in the sleep. None of that batch made it to the South Atlantic before the Argentine surrender

After the war, the Pentagon resisted UK requests to replenish stocks, and had to be pressured to supply 8 Harpoons, and outright refused the supply of DC10 Tankers and 20 F4Js. During that period, there was genuine fear that Argentina might try it again, at a time of heightened Cold War tension (the basing of RAF and RN F4s at Stanley weakened NATO defences).

US Intel was only shared with the British after the Americans came off the fence on April 30. During the Shuttle diplomacy period, the US shared with the Argentinians the outcome of wargaming, thus both emboldening Argentina, but also giving valuable insight how to strengthen their defences. The Americans eventually sold us some extra oil (it wasn't free). Weather data was a routine request through existing agreements to co-share data.

Jeane Kirkpatrick wanted the US to back Argentina, through the Rio treaty, meaning US forces would attack the UK. Only Casper Weinberger took the view from the very outset that the US must back the UK 100%.

In 2026, after an initial short delay, UK permitted the US to use UK airbases to conduct operations. Since early March, the RAF has conducted CAPs across the Middle East, defending American forces. In additionally, RAF Regiment has been supremely active in Northern Iraq defending US ground forces against drone attacks.

The US and UK in flight refuelling systems were incompatible in 1982.

I’m not suggesting anything of the sort.

Thank your for confirming my earlier statements that the US provided the UK with military hardware, ammunition and logistics.

The report got it wrong. The UK did not have KC135 tankers in 1982. We used "Victors" - redundant long range bombers adapted to act as tanker aircraft. They still don't- the "Victors" were replaced by VC10s and subsequently by Airbus A330s.

A cynic might suggest that if the Americans had got involved in the Falklands war they would have declared victory having carpet bombed Montevideo, invaded Tierra Del Fuego and closed the Straits of Magellan.

Oh please hand these islands back to Argentina

There is no need to live in this place being so far away from the UK

Argentina will have the opportunity to multi culturalism and bring foods ,culture and diversity to the Falklands if they received it

May I ask kindly too that you give back northern Ireland to Ireland , surely that's not too much to ask considering it has the word "Ireland" in the name !

You are a numpty aren't you?

A 5 minute Google search would reveal that the principal cultural activities of the Argentinian occupation forces in Port Stanley in 1982 was <deleted>ting on the floor in people's houses and boobytrapping children's toys!

Furthermore the people who live in the Islands, and who have for generations, are almost unanimous in wishing to remain British.

Northern Ireland - well at present a majority of the people who live there wish to remain British. If and when that should change (and it quite possibly will) then it is agreed that Northern Ireland can join the Republic of Ireland. Incidentally that will cost the Republic a lot of money - put bluntly the tax base of Northern Ireland does not cover the costs of running the province.

I was kind of curious why the Brits would die on a hill islands with under 4000 residents and less than $200 million annual GDP:

Historically presidents have been expected to show some grace, dignity and compassion, however Trump has thrown all that out the window.

He is an absolute pig, and no level of decorum is expected of him anymore. This very ugly man possesses such hatred, such bitterness, and his upbringing was such a failure, he must have been subjected to so much abuse by his parents that he just doesn't behave like a civilized person.

Everything that comes out of his mouth is ugly, nasty, critical, vindictive, hateful, vengeful or bitter. This man is one nasty piece of work and is the last man in the world that should be leading America right now. He needs to go, he needs to be shut down, however that can be accomplished it needs to be done.

Couldn't get Greenland and its rare minerals. Settle for Falklands and oil as a consolation prize. We're Americans. We deserve it.

The US deserves nothing now but total self-imposed isolation from the rest of the world if your post is in any way reflects the attitude/thoughts of the average (intelligent?) American!

Why? We in the USA have to listen to how evil and rapacious we are, we are told to return stolen land, why are reparations for Europe so far fetched? All that Gold and treasure and rubber and oil and cloth and spices and tea stolen from countries under the jackboot of the bloodthirsty Europeans? Would Namibia be a wasteland if Von Trotha hadnt been there? Would the Congo be a basket case but for Leopold? How much of all those fancy Euro palaces and artwork came from the lives of poor exploited brown people?

How bout just returning the spoils? Elgin Marbles. Crown Jewels. Rosetta Stone. Benin Bronzes?

Talking of basket cases.

Shouldnt you be ranting about evil, imperialist Israel and Jews in Thailand. You dont think stolen treasure should be returned?. How about the Mueseo de America in Madrid? All that bloody treasure extracted via genocide of Native American tribes. Thank god the Spanish lecture us on morality and critisize Israel for genocide.

Unbelievable, genocide of Native American 1000 years ago by the Spanish, and 300 years later the US nearly finished that job, not a problem as far as dates go, Israel has you well beat, as usual, there claim to land goes back 25,000 years, but lets not let facts get in the way.

Miles off the topic anyway.

The Indian wars were over in the 1890s. There was no genocide, unlike the European colonist who arrived with the aim of extirpating tribes, along with enslavement.

Archeology doesnt support your claim about Israel.
