Starmer was in charge during Rochdale grooming gang failures and needs to apologize

Pressure mounts over past prosecution decisions

Keir Starmer is facing intensifying political heat after Conservatives demanded he apologise to victims of grooming gangs and give evidence under oath to a national inquiry.

The call came in a hard-hitting letter from Chris Philp, who said new revelations about past prosecution decisions raised “very serious” questions about Starmer’s time as Director of Public Prosecutions.

Philp is pushing for the Prime Minister to be formally examined by the inquiry — and barred from any role in shaping it.

‘Disgraceful failures’ claim

At the centre of the row are historic cases, including the Rochdale grooming scandal, where critics argue victims were badly let down.

Philp’s letter alleges that decisions made under Starmer’s leadership contributed to failures in how cases were handled — including controversial legal tactics and charging choices that, critics say, resulted in lighter sentences for some offenders.

“He should publicly apologise… these victims were badly let down,” Philp wrote, urging full accountability “even at the highest level.”

Inquiry battle lines drawn

The demands have been sent to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and inquiry chair Anne Longfield, with pressure building for the probe to explicitly examine Starmer’s role.

The issue of whether a sitting prime minister can or should be drawn directly into such an inquiry is now becoming a central political flashpoint.

Starmer’s past claims resurface

Fuel is being added by Starmer’s own previous statements, where he said he had “oversaw” key prosecutions and helped reshape how such cases were handled.

Supporters argue he improved the system overall and drove reforms. Critics say those claims now cut both ways — strengthening calls for him to answer questions directly.

Wider fallout

The controversy taps into long-running anger over how grooming gang cases were handled across the UK, with repeated findings that authorities missed warning signs and failed victims.

Voices like former detective Maggie Oliver have renewed calls for accountability, saying senior figures must be held responsible regardless of rank.

What happens next

There is, for now, no indication that Starmer will be compelled to testify — and no legal mechanism automatically forces such a move.

But politically, the pressure is building fast.

What started as scrutiny of past cases is now turning into a direct challenge to the Prime Minister’s credibility — and whether he can ride out yet another storm.
