Cambodia shuts down 91 casinos linked to scams

Cambodian authorities have ordered the closure of 91 casinos accused of operating as fronts for online scam networks, in what officials describe as one of the largest crackdowns of its kind.

The closures, announced over the weekend, target venues across multiple provinces that investigators say were being used to lure foreign workers into fraudulent call‑centre operations. Many of the casinos were allegedly involved in schemes designed to trick victims into bogus investments and online gambling scams.

Officials said the move was part of a wider campaign to dismantle criminal networks exploiting Cambodia’s casino industry, which has long been criticised for weak oversight and links to cross‑border crime. The Ministry of Interior confirmed that licences had been revoked and assets seized, with police continuing to investigate individuals connected to the operations.

The crackdown comes amid growing regional pressure to address human trafficking and cyber fraud, with Cambodia facing scrutiny from neighbouring countries over its role as a hub for such activities. Authorities insist the closures demonstrate a commitment to cleaning up the sector and restoring international confidence.

While the government has not disclosed how many workers were affected, rights groups have repeatedly warned that thousands of foreign nationals have been trapped in scam compounds disguised as casinos. The latest action is expected to intensify efforts to rescue victims and prosecute organisers.
