Hi, I need an eye test and new glasses. I bought a pair here in Bangkok a couple of years ago from Top Charoen but I wasn't happy with what I eventually paid. In retrospect I think I could have done a lot better.

Any leads for affordable opticians in Bangkok? I live in Sam Yan area but would travel further if it was worth it.

Thanks for any help

This may not be a popular view, but in line with many medical services in Thailand, you may well be better off experimenting yourself with 'market glasses'. Yes, glaucoma, cataract checks etc. need to be carried out by a professional, in hospital, but normal vision issues are best dealt with in the little outlets. Ophthalmologists, as we understand them in the West, don't appear to exist here, or if they do, are rare, a bit like qualified Vets, You just get a slim, pretty girl in a tight dress trying to sell you stuff you may not need. BTY, I get mine in Big C, 400 Baht and they are perfectly serviceable for what I need.

Getting an eye test, at any age, is important. Rutnin Eye Hospital on Asok, B600. Then you can think about the next step.

  • Glasses are not a good bargain here in Thailand. Most long term expats order from Zenni by mail, much cheaper. Of course you need a prescription first, best gotten from a place like Rutnin as suggeste

I went to a Top Charoen for an exam and a pair of glasses ..... after I got the glasses, I realized what an idiot I am ..

what a waste of time and money .. they have so many outlet / branches / whatever you want to call them,

over staffed like a HomePro and they seem to be giving 711 a run for the who has the most stores ...

I then went to a real Opthamologist and had my eyes re-examined .. no change in vision for almost 20 years now ...

Foster Grant Fold Flat glasses are roughly $20 US and give ME 100% satisfaction I had my son send me 3 pairs
