Legally you can only drive for up to 3 month on an IDP (International Driving Permit). If you stay longer, you'll need to get a Thai drivers license. It's a fairly easy procedure, where you need valid DL, IDP, a passport with a valid visa or permission to stay, and a Thai address confirmation from immigration. If you drive longer than 3 without a Thai DL, you might face problems in case of accident or police heck; furthermore you might have no insurance coverage, as not having a valid DL. I changed to a Thai DL when I moved to here as retiree and extended my stay beyond the 90-days entry stamp. Easy peasy. Your first Thai DL is valid for 2 years, then you can renew it for 5-years periods. You need a standard DL-health check — preferably from a hospital — pass a simple online theory test, and a physical test for sight and reaction when changing to- or renewing Thai DL.
