Vietnam has called on China to respect its sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands and maritime zones, following China’s fishing ban announcement in the East Sea. The Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Pham Thu Hang, emphasized that Vietnam’s stance on the matter remains firm, demanding that China allow Vietnamese fishermen to operate lawfully in its waters.

The controversy stems from China's declaration of a fishing ban from May 1, 2026, to August 16, 2026, affecting areas in the East Sea. Vietnam views this as a violation of its rights and maritime sovereignty, established under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). The dispute highlights ongoing tensions in the region regarding territorial claims and resource rights.

Vietnam’s response underscores a commitment to maintaining its legal rights, urging China to avoid actions that could destabilize the area. Pham Thu Hang stressed the need for China to support a stable and rules-based maritime order, aligning actions with international law. This situation adds to the challenges in ensuring peace and cooperation in the contested waters.

Moving forward, analysts will keep a close eye on any further developments between the two countries. The international community will be assessing the regional implications and potential diplomatic engagements aimed at resolving the situation.
