Seven Filipino seafarers were injured when a drone attack by Iran targeted a container ship navigating the Strait of Hormuz, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) announced on Thursday, May 7. Four seafarers sustained minor injuries while three are under observation for more serious harm. All injured crew members have been evacuated from the Maltese-flagged ship, San Antonio, and are receiving medical attention.

The attack occurred on Tuesday, May 5, amid escalating tensions in the region. Initial reports inaccurately stated that the vessel was French-flagged. DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac clarified the ship's registry, emphasizing ongoing coordination between the DMW, hospital authorities, and foreign embassy officials to ensure the crew's well-being.

The incident underscores heightened risks for seafarers in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic yet volatile area. Over 1,400 Filipino seafarers have reportedly exited the region due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and an Israel-United States alliance. Secretary Cacdac stressed the continued vigilance and assistance measures for affected seafarers and their families.

Looking ahead, the DMW is committed to pursuing safety measures and is actively monitoring the situation to provide necessary support. Efforts include close coordination with international partners and relevant authorities to ensure proper care and security for those involved.
