• US President Donald Trump has called Iran’s leaders “lunatics” after three US destroyers were targeted by missiles, drones and small boats in the Strait of Hormuz. The US military said the attacks were “unprovoked” and were intercepted, with no damage to the warships.

• Despite the clash, Trump says ceasefire between the US and Iran is still ‘in effect’. The US responded with strikes on what it said were the Iranian military facilities responsible for the attacks. These included launch sites and command-and-control centres, according to US statements.

• US headquarters said it was not seeking escalation but remained ready to defend American forces in the region. Trump then warned Iran the US would hit “a lot harder” if Tehran did not sign a deal to end the conflict quickly.
