A Chinese national was arrested in Chonburi after police discovered military-grade weapons, explosives and bomb-making plans at a rented house in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung district, on 8 May 2026.

Police said the investigation began after a car driven by Mingchen Sun, 31, overturned in Na Jomtien. Officers searching the vehicle reportedly found a handgun, leading investigators to search a rented property linked to the suspect. A Taiwanese woman, identified as Ma, Yu-Hsin, 33, was also in the vehicle.

During the raid, officers said they recovered multiple assault rifles, including M4 assault rifles, ammunition, grenades, detonators and several blocks of C4 explosive. Authorities also reported finding a bulletproof vest rigged with C4 and connected to a remote triggering system, prompting an emergency evacuation of nearby residents while explosive ordnance disposal teams secured the scene.

According to police statements, officers discovered booby traps inside the property, including wires allegedly connected to grenade pins. Investigators also found military training videos on the suspect’s mobile phone showing firearms and grenade exercises in Cambodia, including footage linked to the BHQ or “Hun Sen bodyguard” training camp.

Police further stated that chats on the suspect’s phone showed conversations with ChatGPT discussing sabotage methods, potential targets and the destructive capability of C4 explosives. Authorities said investigators were examining whether the suspect intended to carry out an attack and if he had links to wider transnational criminal networks.

Additional items seized included gas masks, signal-jamming equipment, fake identity documents and passports from several countries. Security officials said some ammunition recovered bore markings linked to Thai military production. Investigators are also examining documents and coded notes found at the property.

The suspect told police he previously operated a liquor business in Cambodia before moving to Thailand. He reportedly claimed the weapons were purchased through a private LINE group several years ago in Rayong province. He also stated that the explosive vest was intended for suicide because he suffered from depression.

Bomb disposal officers later confirmed the explosive device had been safely defused. Senior officers from Provincial Police Region 2 travelled to the scene to oversee the operation, while forensic teams continued gathering evidence overnight.

Amarin reported that authorities said the investigation remains ongoing, with police focusing on the source of the weapons, possible cross-border links and whether additional suspects were involved.

Police Expand Probe Into Suspected Pattaya Terror Plot

Thai police have widened their investigation into a suspected terror plot after the arrest of a 31-year-old Chinese national in Chonburi, where officers seized military-grade weapons, explosives and tactical equipment from a rented house in Huai Yai, Bang Lamung district.

The suspect, identified as Mingchen Sun, was arrested after crashing his car in the Na Jomtien area of Sattahip district on 8 May 2026. Police searching the vehicle allegedly found a handgun and ammunition magazines, leading officers to raid his rented property where they uncovered assault rifles, grenades, detonators, C4 explosives and other military-style equipment.

At 22.30 on 8 May, Chonburi Provincial Police commander Major General Phongphan Wongmanit travelled to the property to oversee the investigation. He instructed Na Jomtien police investigators to document every seized item in detail and coordinate with forensic officers from Police Forensic Science Division 2 in Chonburi to gather further evidence.

Major General Phongphan said National Police Chief Police General Kittirat Phanphet had ordered investigators to examine the case from every angle, particularly issues linked to national security and public safety. He declined to disclose further operational details, saying doing so could affect the investigation.

Authorities are now investigating whether the stockpile of explosives and weapons was linked to preparations for an attack, while also tracing the source of the military hardware. Police said the suspect’s claim that he suffered from depression would be reviewed by psychiatrists as part of the inquiry.

Several agencies have joined the investigation, including Provincial Police Region 2, Chonburi provincial police, immigration police, EOD bomb disposal teams, security agencies and representatives from the Chinese embassy.

Investigators found the suspect had rented the property for 38,000 baht per month and had lived there for around two years. Records showed he had travelled in and out of Thailand several times since 2020, most recently entering the country on 27 January 2026 using a re-entry visa linked to a long-stay visa.

Police also said the suspect possessed passports from both China and Cambodia, a pink identification card for individuals without official registration status, and was listed on a Bangkok house registration document. Authorities are verifying the authenticity of all documents.

Seized items included a Glock 26 pistol, M16 rifles, more than 700 rounds of ammunition, almost 7.3kg of C4 explosives, Russian POMZ2 anti-personnel mines, BA/WA grenades, a Korean K75 grenade, a Myanmar M6/01 grenade, electric detonators, remote-control trigger devices, bulletproof vests, gas masks and four 20-litre containers of petrol.

Residents in the housing estate told reporters they were shocked by the discovery, describing the suspect as polite and friendly. Several said they feared the entire neighbourhood could have been devastated if the explosives had detonated.

It's a little disturbing that, had the guy been a better driver, his arsenal would still be hidden away.

I wonder if he actually had a plan?

Possibly trying to sell these weapons to the Myanmar rebels, or the South Thailand group of rebels

And of course the AN posters' opinion that RTP are useless because they don't patrol the highways. whistling

Yeah probably an arm dealer looking to off load weapons and make a buck, Pattaya has them all.

Chinese Suspect in Pattaya Bomb Probe Remanded

IMG_1439.png

A Chinese national accused of stockpiling military-grade weapons and explosives in Chonburi has been remanded in custody at Pattaya Provincial Court, while immigration authorities moved to revoke his visa and blacklist him from Thailand.

The case stems from a crash involving a car on a road near the Huai Yai railway area in Bang Lamung district, Chonburi. Police from Na Jomtien station discovered suspicious items inside the vehicle, leading to a wider search operation that uncovered firearms, ammunition, C4 explosives and tactical military equipment at a rented property linked to the suspect.

On the morning of 9 May 2026, investigators escorted Mingchen Sun, 30, from a detention cell for further questioning with the assistance of an interpreter. Reporters said the suspect appeared expressionless, spoke very little and seemed distracted throughout the process before officers took fingerprints and formally processed him for detention.

Police then transferred the suspect under heavy security to Pattaya Provincial Court for a remand hearing, as the court was operating for a half-day session ahead of a long government holiday weekend. Authorities deployed patrol vehicles to escort the prison transport convoy due to concerns over the sensitivity of the case and possible links to transnational criminal networks.

Investigators said the suspect was facing multiple serious charges, including illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, carrying a firearm in public without permission, possession of prohibited weapons, illegal possession of explosives and unauthorised possession of military equipment.

Chonburi immigration chief Colonel Naphatphong Kosit Suriyamanee confirmed that immigration officers had already served notice revoking the suspect’s permission to remain in Thailand. Officials said he would be deported immediately after the legal process concludes.

Police also clarified the role of the Taiwanese woman seen with the suspect at the time of the crash. Investigators said she was a friend who had met him while working as a tour guide during his visit to Taiwan in January. She later travelled to Thailand in April and had planned to return home on 10 May.

According to investigators, CCTV footage from the rented house showed the pair staying in separate rooms throughout her visit. Police said they had found no evidence linking her to the seized weapons or explosives.

Separately, officers from Nimit Mai police station and Metropolitan Police investigation units searched a house in Bangkok linked to the suspect’s former Thai wife. The woman, identified only as Jantima, told police she married Mingchen Sun on 20 July 2022 and divorced him on 21 April 2025.

She said they first met at the Waterside restaurant and that the suspect frequently travelled in and out of Thailand, claiming to operate a car rental business in South Korea while mainly staying in Pattaya. Police said no illegal items or dangerous materials were found during the Bangkok search.

Amarin reported that authorities and security agencies are continuing to investigate the origin of the seized weapons and explosives, possible smuggling routes and whether the arsenal was intended for use in a planned attack or linked to wider international criminal groups.

Investigators later confirmed that at least one of the seized weapons was linked to a police officer at Sai Mai Police Station in Bangkok, although it remains unclear whether the items were stolen or transferred unlawfully. Further reporting suggests the weapon was passed through Huai Khwang Police Station before reaching the suspect.

Police have also arrested a man accused of selling a firearm to Mr Sun. The unnamed suspect is reportedly an employee at a shooting range and is being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

It’s unsettling that this guy was able to amass such an arsenal. Whether his motive was profit or as a rebel with a cause, the risk to the others is the same, and the severity of the sentencing should reflect that.

If he intent was to make money, that’s hardly a lesser offence, in fact it should makes things worse by enabling further violence!

I think the most important thing is how he managed to acquire all of this in the first place. The police must find this out so they can prevent this type of event happening again.

Unfortunately, Pattaya is once again making headlines for all the wrong reasons.
