A clarification is necessary.

Medical consensus (in a nutshell, among seasoned medical doctors in my home country): Oral sex is harmless concerning the spread of all kinds of sexually transmitted deseases.

Yes or no? A clarification is necessary.

Definitely can get gonorrhoea, so it's a No for harmless. If you had specifically asked about HIV then it's a Yes harmless with caveats

I suggest you consult appropriately qualified medical professionals; especially those working in the communicable disease field.

Oral sex maybe less of a risk than vaginal or anal sex, but it still has a quantifiable risk of contracting a number of STIs/STDs; one (at least) of which HPV, can lead to oral, head, neck, etc. cancer.

Risks and Considerations

Ask Michael Douglas.

AI Overview

Michael Douglas, 81, famously revealed in 2010 that his stage-four tongue/throat cancer was caused by HPV, a sexually transmitted virus. His openness highlighted the link between human papillomavirus (HPV) and oropharyngeal cancer, as HPV is now the primary cause of throat cancers.

Key Details on Movie Star HPV Throat Cancer:

  • Michael Douglas's Case: In 2013, Douglas disclosed his 2010 stage-four cancer was caused by HPV, contracted via oral sex. He underwent intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy and is now cancer-free.

  • The "Michael Douglas Effect": His public disclosure significantly raised awareness about HPV-related head and neck cancers, which often affect the tonsils, base of the tongue, or throat.

  • Other Survivors: Actors like Steve Bergman (UK) have discussed their battle with HPV-related throat cancer to promote awareness and vaccination,. Other actors, including Val Kilmer and Stanley Tucci, have also survived throat cancer, with Kilmer’s battle later recognized as HPV-linked.

  • Misconceptions: While popular media focused intensely on the link to oral sex, experts clarified that HPV is common and most people clear the virus naturally; it is not always a direct cause of cancer.

Oral sex is just a matter of taste.

I reckon a bigger issue is.......

Oral sex is now a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancer (throat cancer, specifically in the tonsils and back of the throat) due to the transmission of high-risk Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

According to a rather extensive bit of reading and research on the topic, it would appear that oral sex for women is relatively harmless unless they swallow, or the guy has an outbreak of some sort. For men it's a whole different story, there are a multitude of diseases and STDs that one can pick up from going down on a babe you don't know. And if she's a pro the odds increase dramatically. And the problem is you really don't know because they all have a story.

True but how big of an issue is it really? Tiny IMO and much more important things to worry about :)

You can catch even aids with Oral ... but up to you to risk it at your own cost.

No, you can't. You certainly mean HIV, not AIDS, it is not the same. AIDS is the last stage of untreated HIV infection.
