He was chosen because he was the supreme bootlicker and because of his full rolodex. The government resorted to cover up, which ruined them. It might have been better to be more open about it; I suspect the public would have been more accepting of an explanation that the US now is more of an adversary than friend to the UK, with a leader who would very cheerfully torch British industry for votes, and with that comes a UK government having to take unusual steps in choosing Mandleson. He still would have been sacked, but the public would understand difficult circumstances.
