Putin issues warning as Armenia hit by massive bot campaign

Armenia is facing an escalating online assault ahead of elections as Vladimir Putin warned the country’s push toward Europe “requires special consideration” — invoking the devastation of Ukraine as a cautionary tale.

A sprawling pro-Russian disinformation network targeted Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan months before voters head to the polls, raising fears Moscow is preparing to destabilise another former Soviet neighbour drifting away from the Kremlin’s orbit.

Digital Offensive Begins Months Early

Investigators say the manipulation campaign began an extraordinary 243 days before Armenia’s June 2026 parliamentary election — far earlier than similar operations seen in Moldova, Germany or the United States.

More than 340 fake videos have already flooded social media platforms. The material ranges from fabricated news clips to conspiracy-driven broadcasts designed to undermine confidence in Pashinyan’s government.

Analysts say the scale alone points to a highly organised operation.

Health Rumours and War Fears Flood Social Media

The campaign has also shifted tactics. Instead of focusing purely on corruption allegations, fake reports are now targeting Pashinyan personally, spreading rumours about his health and political stability.

At the same time, bot accounts are aggressively pushing claims that Armenia is preparing for a military confrontation with Russia. One widely circulated fake video falsely claimed NATO instructors had already arrived in the country ahead of a planned conflict.

Armenian officials dismissed the reports as disinformation designed to inflame public fear before the election campaign intensifies.

Putin Draws Direct Line to Ukraine

The rhetoric from Moscow has only heightened tensions.

Speaking about Armenia’s ambitions to deepen ties with the European Union, Putin warned the issue “requires special consideration” before drawing a direct comparison with Ukraine.

“We are currently experiencing everything that is happening in Ukraine,” he said. “And where did it all begin? With Ukraine’s accession or attempt to join the EU.”

The remark landed like a threat in Yerevan, where fears are growing that Armenia could become the Kremlin’s next pressure point.

Kremlin Pressure Campaign Expands

Local journalists investigating the bot network say the operation bears the hallmarks of coordinated Russian influence tactics: cloned accounts, repeated messaging, identical video formats and synchronised posting patterns.

For Armenia, the stakes stretch far beyond online propaganda. The country is attempting to loosen decades of Russian dominance while balancing a fragile regional security situation.

With Moscow openly framing closer EU ties as a potential trigger for conflict, the information war now appears to be moving into a far more dangerous phase.
